Roy Bonner Bergman

Roy Bonner Bergman

January 16, 1943-November 29, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce that Roy Bonner Bergman, 82, a 50-year resident of Friendswood, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 29, 2025. He leaves behind a void that can never be filled.

He was born on January 16, 1943, to Mary Ertel and George A. Bergman, Jr., in Fort Worth, Texas. He lived in Fort Worth until 1954, eventually settling in Huntington, New York, by way of Arlington, Virginia, before returning to Texas in 1975. He was a faithful and devoted member of Shadycrest Baptist Church, and his life was marked by deep Christian faith, steadfast devotion to his wife, Shirley, and their family, and an extraordinarily generous heart.

Roy was distinguished by his exceptional business acumen and unwavering work ethic, which led him to establish multiple businesses and pursue a wide range of professional endeavors throughout his life. He was the family’s historian, known for his remarkable ability to recall events and dates with precision. A former Mathlete, he retained exceptional mathematical aptitude well into later life, often surpassing those decades younger than himself. He also enjoyed playing tennis throughout his life and pickleball in his later years, and he even recently outplayed his youngest daughter in tennis at an elevation of 8,000 feet.

Roy was unwaveringly devoted to his wife of 43 years. Following Shirley’s diagnosis with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, he provided around-the-clock care with selflessness and quiet dedication over the last decade. Above all, he was a faithful follower and messenger of Christ, and his family takes comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of God.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ertel Bergman and George A. Bergman, Jr.; his paternal grandparents, George and Cordova Bergman, Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Roy and Frances Bonner; his brother, George A. Bergman III; and his grandson, Michael Harrell.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Paris Bergman; their children, Donna Bergman; Christina Cherry (Bergman) and her husband, James; Amy Escoto (Riley) and her husband, Herminio; Abigail Bergman and her husband, Igor Gorlach; Karl Bergman and his wife, Dawnna; Aaron Riley and his wife, Chelsea; and Nathan Riley and his wife, Megan; and his sisters, Mary Ann Boehlhoff (Bergman) and Martha Ellen Ambrosio (Bergman). He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Shadycrest Baptist Church in Pearland, Texas, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Visitation will be from 8:30- 10:00am with the service beginning at 10:00 am, followed by a graveside service and burial at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Roy’s legacy of generosity by making a donation in his memory to Logos-Prisoners Bible Institute, an organization near and dear to his heart, or to his beloved Shadycrest Baptist Church.

Roy was a dear friend from 40+ years ago. We spoke by phone a year or so ago and picked up right where we left off. I shall cherish that last conversation. When I think of him, I recall his calm, good humor, patient, kindhearted personality. His light for Christ shined brightly and my husband and I were privileged to know him.
May our Lord shower his wonderful family with grace and peace knowing that to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord.
