October 17, 1943 – May 11, 2024
Phillip Lloyd Martin peacefully gained his wings at age 80 on Saturday May 11, 2024, while at UTMB hospital in Webster, Texas. Both his daughters were fortunate to have loving conversations with him the Friday evening prior to his passing.
Phillip was born on October 17,1943 in St. Catherine, Jamaica. His parents Moses “Pa” Martin and Rosetta Martin were devout members of Church of Christ. Phillip lived the earlier part of his life in the small town of Braeton with his 4 sisters and 4 brothers and would never resist a chance to drive down for a dip at Hellshire beach, drink fresh coconut, chat with family, friends and siblings. He was a graduate of the University of West Indies and then married Lydia Cervantes on August 22, 1969, in Kingston Jamaica. He was a schoolteacher at St. Jago High School in Jamaica then gained his master’s in chemistry from the University of Houston. He was a brewing manager at Giunness while living in Jamaica. In 1979, his family moved to Houston, Texas where he continued to work as a brewing manager and later retired from Anheuser Busch. He loved conversation, telling old family stories, debates and had a great sense of humor. Phillip had an uncanny ability to manage challenges of life with grace as he was often in and out of the hospital for several chronic medical conditions.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patrice Jonathan and Dr. Francene Martin, sons-in-law Brian Jonathan and Keith Tanguay, three grandchildren Stephon Jonathan, Giovanni and Isabella Tanguay. Surviving siblings include his sisters, Shirley Ho and Hazel Powell, brothers, Rainford, Donald, and Ashley Martin. He also has a niece and nephew who grew up with him more as an older brother to Jennifer Oneal and Joseph “Sukie” Williams. He is predeceased by his parents, wife Lydia, sisters, Gloria Nembhard, Ivy Holness and most recently his brother Marshall Martin.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Memorial Mass on June 22, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Evangelist Church, 5655 Stadium Parkway, Viera, Florida. Following the Mass, a Celebration of Life will be hosted at Serenity Venue, 3980 Sarno Road, Melbourne, Florida.
Live streaming will be available for those unable to attend and site will be available one week prior to the Mass. Those wishing to remember Phillip in a special way may send flowers to the Memorial Mass.

I did not know Philip for very long but the short time I did know him he was so nice and had some really good stories to tell. I remember telling him that I wished I would have known him when he was younger. For the short time that I knew Phillip , I can honestly say that he will be missed !

I Remember him given a lot of jokes back in Braeton. Hr would go see Georgie Parjie. Georgie call him" bwoye let's go to Hellshire Beach to eat fry fish and festival and drink Heineken". That was him in those days. 🥰
