In Loving Memory

Nelva Ovan Urick

Nelva Ovan Urick

July 16, 1941-February 24, 2026

Nelva Urick passed away surrounded by love, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of family devotion, community leadership, and unwavering strength. A woman of conviction, grace, and determination, Nelva lived a life defined by service and purpose, and she made a lasting difference in the lives of many.

Family was the center of Nelva’s world. Her proudest and most cherished role was that of mother. She loved fiercely and without condition. She showed up, offered steady encouragement, and believed deeply in her children and grandchildren. Her home was a welcoming place filled with laughter, shared meals, and celebrations where everyone felt included. She had a natural gift for bringing people together and creating traditions that will continue for generations.

Nelva valued faith, integrity, and responsibility, and those principles guided the way she lived her life. She carried herself with quiet strength, choosing kindness and service in both her personal life and her involvement in the community.

While raising her family was her greatest achievement, Nelva also poured her heart into her beloved community of Alvin and throughout Brazoria County. She was a member of the Alvin Extension Homemakers for over 50 years — a testament to her dedication to friendship, leadership, and civic involvement.

Her volunteer spirit was especially evident at the Brazoria County Fair, where she devoted countless hours of service and was honored as Volunteer of the Year. When her children were involved in 4-H, Nelva stepped forward as a dedicated 4-H leader. Whether guiding cooking method demonstrations, supporting animal projects, or preparing young people for competitions, she gave her full energy and commitment. She especially loved serving as a food leader, teaching young people how to cook and take pride in their accomplishments. Through patience and encouragement, she helped instill confidence, responsibility, and valuable life skills in the next generation.

Nelva was also a trailblazer in public service. A proud member of the Republican Party, she stepped into leadership as an elected official and became the first woman elected to a county office in Brazoria County. In doing so, she helped pave the way for other women to serve in public office. Her courage and determination opened doors and set an example of strong, capable leadership.

Her commitment to the well-being of others extended beyond elected office. Nelva believed in protecting and strengthening her community. She was actively involved in efforts that supported families and improved the quality of life in Alvin and Brazoria County, always ready to lend her time and voice where they were needed.

She was a proud supporter of Keep Alvin Beautiful and worked diligently to help restore the historic Alvin Depot. Nelva believed her hometown was something to treasure. If there was a worthy cause — a project to improve the town, a need within the community, or a fight to make Alvin better — she was committed. Alvin was not simply where she lived; it was a place she loved and invested in wholeheartedly.

Nelva will be remembered for her welcoming heart, steady presence, and strong sense of purpose. She celebrated life’s joyful moments with gratitude and faced challenges with resolve. Her quiet determination held her family together, and her leadership left a meaningful imprint on her community.

Nelva was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willie Urick; her parents, Paul and Edna Wofford; and her brothers, Bill Wofford and Paul Wofford. She is survived by her loving daughter and son, along with their families, who will forever cherish her warmth, resilience, and steadfast love. Her grandchildren and extended family were a constant source of pride and joy, and she treasured every gathering, milestone, and shared memory.

Friends and family are cordially invited to the visitation on Friday, March 6th, 2026, from 5-8 p.m. at the Alvin Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at Alvin Methodist Church on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 11 a.m. with the burial to follow at Confederate Cemetery in Alvin.  Friends and family are invited to gather afterward at the Alvin Depot to share stories, laughter, and remembrance — just as she would have wanted.

Nelva’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and service. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the children she raised, the grandchildren she adored, the lives she influenced, and the town she helped shape. Alvin is better because she lived here. Brazoria County is stronger because she served. And those who knew her are better because she was part of their lives.

I am so sorry to hear about Nelva. We met in the seventies. We worked together on several different fund raisers. She was a great asset and will be greatly missed. I was proud to call her my friend. God be with her family at this sad time.

Vicki I am so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I don’t ever remember seeing her without her beautiful smile. As we grew up she was always there to support us or lend a hand. She was such a treasure. Mike and I send our deepest condolences.

I remember her through 4-H back in the 70’s…she and my mother forged district (beyond County, beneath State) awards together! Lovely kind lady!..
