In Loving Memory

Modena Faye Haygood Huffman

June 2, 1924 – June 2, 2022

Modena Faye Haygood Huffman passed June 2, 2022, her 98th birthday and her first day in Heaven, we celebrate both.  Modena was born on the “home place” to Hugh F. Haygood and Bessie U. McCaghren Haygood in Young county, Olney, Texas, June 2, 1924 a few minutes before her twin brother, W. J. Haygood.  She loved the country but disliked the chore of picking/pulling cotton. The city was her future.  She met Ray Huffman in the farm community of Jean, Texas.  The single-minded two decided to elope and married in nearby Newcastle, Texas.  It was Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1943.  They celebrated their 79th anniversary Valentine’s Day, 2022.

Ray worked as soda jerk and funeral home assistant, Modena continued her chores on the farm and both graduated Olney High.  Ray joined the Navy soon after to serve in WW2.  Eighteen months later, he returned from his honorable service to Modena and young Bobby.  Modena Is survived by her loving children, Bobby Huffman from Bufford, Georgia, Larry and wife Mary Huffman from Alvin, Texas, and daughter Cynthia Mathis and husband Dennis from Littleton, Colorado.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Modena was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Ray Huffman, son Mike Huffman, twin brother W.J. Haygood, sisters, Elaine Cooper, and Vela Farmer.

Upon Ray’s return from service, Modena and Ray launched their lives.  Modena focused on nurturing her family from ranch territory to city landscape.  Modena, Ray and family became energy immigrants from North to South Texas with Phillips Petroleum Company.  Alvin, Texas was the city life Modena had desired and where the family set roots and matured.  Modena’s devoted focus on her children later was shared when she became a certified dental and surgical assistant and worked for several dentists in the Alvin area.

Modena and Ray retired and traveled several years abroad and throughout the states.  She and Ray were life-time members of the Model A Club of Houston and enjoyed many great times and memories with club members that became as family.

Modena was a member of Bayou Baptist Church, and a bible could always be found within her arm’s reach.  She loved Jesus and was heard softly, saying“I’m ready, I want to come home, send someone to get me”.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Confederate Cemetery in Alvin, Texas with Rev. Thomas Bolton officiating.

Modena wished in lieu of flowers donations to be made to Bayou Drive Baptist Church of Alvin, 612 E. Dumble St., Alvin, Texas 77511, www.bayoudrivebaptistchurch.com or the Church family of your life.

  1. Dear Cindy, Dennis, Larry, Mary, Bobby and family, I just so sorry to hear about your mother. She was a beautiful lady. Your mom and dad made a beautiful couple and raised some amazing children. I was unable to attend your father’s visitation and missed visiting with you. I hope to see you Tuesday. Love, Diana and Steve Townsend

Dear Huffman Family, We send our sympathy on Modena's passing, but we rejoice on her arrival at her Eternal Home. We have known Modena & Ray a long time as special friends in the Model A Club. What a lovely couple! Many years ago when I first began square dancing with Ted in the early days of our marriage, Modena gave me several square dance dresses to get me started. A typical gesture of a lady who was kindness itself. We pray the Lord will bless all the family with His comfort and peace. We send our love. Ted and Millie Edwards
