May 6, 1964-May 26, 2026
Michael Dayton Boase, 62, passed away suddenly at his northwest Houston home over the Memorial Day weekend. He had had recent health issues and a heart attack several months ago.
He is the son of Beverly and David Baldwin of Friendswood.
Michael was born May 6, 1964, in Midland TX to Beverly Beard Boase (now Baldwin) and John Charles Boase.
He had a forty-year career in hospital business office management, serving as director of business office and patient financial services in Texas, Florida and Arizona hospitals. During ten years with Children’s Medical Center, Dallas, he managed the hospital’s and its satellite facilities’ conversion to the Epic system, the patient and financial management system known to patients across the nation as “My Chart”. As director of patient financial services, he was responsible for the hospital’s revenue from point of admission through collection, managing a staff of more than 100 employees.
Holding many Epic certifications, he was senior Epic analyst for Methodist Hospital of Dallas, working remotely at the time of his passing. He held a similar Epic analyst position for Harris Health, Houston from 2014 through 2023.
Michael’s hospital career began in Beaumont, where he worked parttime in reservations and admission services for St. Elizabeth Hospital, while studying at Lamar University as a business management major. He continued his business financial management education at University of Texas, Dallas, and Amberton University, Garland, while employed as director of business services at Baylor Medical Center, Garland.
Michael’s childhood was spent in West Texas where he was an altar boy, a Boy Scout, an AAU award winning swimmer, and an avid tennis player on the school team. He studied piano, “suffering through” several years of instruction and practice to qualify for an audition for the school’s award-winning band’s percussion section. Successfully, he performed with the band for several years, enjoying trips and contests with his bandmates.
Always ambitious and eager to work, Michael established a paper route with his parents and three neighbors as customers. Within eight or nine months, he had expanded his new business to more than 400 customers and put in his own private phone line at home to handle any customer service issues. He also convinced a family friend to hire him at her pizza or taco restaurants where he washed dishes and swept the floors, getting paid in cash because he wasn’t old enough to work legally. With his earnings and a commitment to saving, Michael bought a tv and stereo system for his room, and a car as soon as he was able to drive.
His mother was shocked when she received a call one day from their bank’s president who had just had a meeting with the fifteen-year-old Michael, who had requested the appointment to secure a loan. He had assured the stunned officer that he needed the $500 to buy a stock he wanted to invest in! He also assured the bank president that he could cover the $500 with the money in his own savings account but wanted to begin establishing credit in his own name. Because of his age, the loan request was denied, but the officer told his parents, “stay in touch with me, I want to hire him when he gets out of school.. That kid is going to go far!”
His education continued in Gainesville TX, in 1979, when he moved with his sister, Tracey Michele Boase, and their then single mother, who was beginning her own career in a hospital management position.
When their mother was offered a more lucrative position at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont, the Boase family decided that Michael would remain in their Gainesville home to complete his senior year in high school, care for their two Westies, Sugar Bear and Maximus. Remaining in their home also allowed him to continue his job at the local Pizza Hut where he was night manager and maintain their home while it was on the market. The decision, made in a family meeting, included a plan that his sister and mother would commute from Beaumont to Gainesville each weekend, and that they would all move to Beaumont following his graduation.
Michael participated in drama club, debate team, band and other activities. He graduated in 1982 with honors and joined his family in Beaumont as planned. He enrolled at Lamar University and was soon employed in his first hospital position.
Michael loved all things Apple and digital and once had a personalized license plate proclaiming “APL-HLP-DSK”. He had a great sense of humor, was a generous, caring and loving guy who has a huge circle of friends and family mourning him. Michael, active in the LGBTQ community, was passionate about equality, diversity and acceptance. He loved camping and travelling.
Michael purchased property in Colorado with future plans to build a home there and become a snowbird after retirement. His pre-retirement plans included traveling to all national parks in his RV, while continuing to work remotely.
Michael is pre-deceased by his sister, Tracey Michele Boase Smith, his father, John Charles Boase; his bonus sister Sarah Lisa Baldwin Rose, his paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Teel Boase; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Beard, his uncle David A. Seifried, lifetime best friend Andrea True, his Westie Chelsea, and family Westies Sugar Bear, Maximus, Meagan and Spencer.
Michael is survived by his parents David and Beverly Baldwin of Friendswood, his bonus sister Rachel Gita Baldwin Foster of Sacramento CA; his aunt Diana Beard Seifried and several cousins of Aurora MO; his “second mother” Lola Schlegel Squyres of San Angelo TX and two lifetime best sisters-friends Shelly Squyres Hughes of Sonora TX and Kelly Squyres of San Angelo TX; plus many friends in Texas and Florida.
A celebration of life honoring Michael will be held on July 12, 2026, from 1:00-6:00 PM, at his parents’ Friendswood home. Michael’s ashes will be scattered at his favorite camping spot near Lake Jackson, Wyoming, near Yellowstone National Park.
