In Loving Memory

Mary Ann Gaston Carter

May 31, 1931 – December 18, 2021

Mary Ann Gaston Carter, 90, of Webster, Texas passed to Heaven on December 18, 2021.  She was born on May 31, 1931 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Charles Watterson Gaston and Wanzie Ann Owens Gaston.

Growing up predominantly in small East Texas towns such as Nacogdoches and Mineral Wells, she attended Sam Houston State University where she met and married a handsome Californian named John Leland Carter in January 1950.  She also graduated from Sam Houston in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching.  Mary would later acquire a Master’s Degree from the University of Houston and finish her Ph.D. though not writing a Dissertation.

Mary & John were married for 59 years. The marriage ending with the untimely death of John from cancer in 2009. Throughout their marriage, Mary & John lived in many places including Ft. Benning, Georgia; Vidor, Texas; Natchitoches, Louisiana; Auburn, Alabama and Houston, Texas.  They raised two children, Karen and Brian.

Mary enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.  She was quiet and studious.  She was also compassionate and understanding, non-judgmental and empathetic.  In 64 years I never heard her say one negative thing about anyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Carter (2009) and daughter Karen Carter (2020).  She is survived by her son, Brian Carter; grandchildren Adrien (Michael); Neil (Lauren); Galen (Mary) and Joel (Robert).  She is also survived by great grandchildren Kendelle, Jacob, Karli, Jared, Evelyn and Ian.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, December 27, 2021 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 (281) 992-7200, with the Rev. Kenny Carter officiating.
