Lucas Vegas Jr., 86, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026. He was born on August 27, 1939, in Goose Creek (Baytown), Texas, to Lucas and Dominga Vegas.
Lucas graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, where he played varsity football and baseball and ran track. During those years, he helped lead the Ganders to the State Semifinals in 1956. Lucas was a leader both on and off the field.
After graduating from high school, Lucas worked his way through college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in education from Sam Houston State University.
He began his career with the Pasadena Independent School District, serving as a teacher for seven years, a counselor for three years, an assistant principal at Sam Rayburn High School for ten years, and principal of South Houston Intermediate School for thirteen years. In 1990, Lucas was selected by the Texas Education Agency’s Middle School Division as a Mentor Principal, and his school was designated a mentor middle school. In 1992, he was honored as Educator of the Year by the South Houston Chamber of Commerce.
As an educator, Lucas lived with the belief that every student could learn, regardless of their challenges. He was a dedicated mentor who did whatever it took to help others grow and succeed. He retired from South Houston Intermediate in 1995.
Not only was Lucas successful in athletics and his career, but he was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. While his children were growing up, he played an active role in their lives and in the lives of many of their friends. He coached Little League teams and enthusiastically supported his children in all their activities. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, whether playing with them or cheering them on from the sidelines.
Lucas was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Ruth Reed Vegas; his parents, Lucas and Dominga Vegas; and his sister, Dominga Vegas Lopez.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Scarbrough; his brother, James Vegas (Nelda); his daughter, Lucinda Bright (Joe), and their children, Elizabeth Wright (Daniel), Noah Bright (Magen), Sarah Bright, Katie Ruth Bright, and McKenzie Bright; his son, Luke Vegas (Angie), and their children, Jacob Vegas (Erica), Joshua Vegas, and Lane Vegas; his son, Jaime Vegas (Brooke), and their children, Sully Vegas and Sloane Vegas; his stepson, Stephen Scarbrough (Dana), and their children, Wyatt and Tyler; and his stepdaughter, Stacey Scarbrough.
Lucas will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to education, his love for family, and the countless lives he touched through his leadership, kindness, and example.
Friends and family are cordially invited to the Visitation on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home and the Funeral Service on Thursday, June 11th, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at 311 N. Friendswood Dr. Friendswood, TX 77546.

I met mister Lucas I believe 2 times. It was nice to know that he had been an educator because so am I. Also, I got to know from him the true story about why they call El Paso, Texas, “el chuco” interesting that had a peculiar way of being charismatic which is essential of being a good leader in education as it has been described in his obituary.
May he rest in peace.

I’ll miss Lucas now like I have missed Ruth for so many years. They were both so kind and great neighbors. I’ll never forget those after -the-parade hot dog lunches at the Vegas’s or seeing Lucas ready to take one of his sons to baseball practice almost every day it seemed. They were always coming or going to play ball somewhere.
I’ll miss him tremendously. The neighborhood wasn’t the same after he moved away.
The SHHS CLASS OF 1970 had a great teacher. He was one of many that shaped our life’s and gave us an exceptional education.
His candor and passion were obvious and has stayed with me all these years.

Mr. Vegas was the best. He taught me along with a couple of my siblings. He loved his students and if you ran into him he remembered your name and who your siblings were. He will be missed. Condolences to the family.
