Joe Donald Gordon

September 23, 1946 – May 24, 2025

Joe Donald Gordon, age 78, of Friendswood, TX made transition on May 24, 2025.   He was born September 23, 1946 in Austin, TX to the late James A. Gordon and Martha M. Gordon Clisbee.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved son Christopher Gordon.  He is survived by his wife Jill E. Gordon; sisters Judy Blake, JimmiSue (Jim) Margoni and Nona (Frank) Swords; stepson John Dobernecker (Melissa); stepdaughter Beth Balberchak; and four beautiful granddaughters: Taryn Dobernecker, Kailyn (Anthony) Dominguez, Meagan Dobernecker, and Heather Balberchak; great granddaughter Rylie Dominguez and great grandson Bowen Moody. 

Joe graduated from Lamar High School in Rosenberg, TX in 1965.  He spent his freshman year at the University of Notre Dame which he enjoyed tremendously.  Joe returned to Houston and obtained his BA in Chemistry and BA in Biology from the University of St. Thomas.   He entered the Army in 1970 and was stationed in Germany.  Joe was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and Marksman (rifle M-16) award.  After an honorable discharge from the Army in 1972 Joe entered The University of Houston and earned his CPA.   He maintained his membership with the Houston Texas Association of CPAs until he passed.

Joe was a lifelong student, studying his many books on Jungian psychology, astronomy, chemistry, biology, mathematics, many of the major religions of the world, yoga practices, meditation and more.  He enjoyed music of all kinds, and at a great volume.  He considered himself a mystic, beginning when he was 8 years old with a vision of the Virgin Mary.  While he had a very personal Christian faith, he went on to make in-depth studies in Sufiism, Tibetan Buddhism, Native American Medicine Wheel, and Hinduism.  He loved the chants from all religious traditions.  Joe was a devoted meditator.  He liked writing and was an irreverent poet.  He loved to tell jokes to get people to laugh.  Joe enjoyed photography and has a lot of pictures from his travels throughout his life. 

Visitation at 1:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. will be celebrated on Friday, June 6, 2025 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX.  In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Humane Society or Houston Humane Society, 14700 Almeda Rd., Houston, TX 77053.

  1. So sorry to learn of Joe’s death! He was a friend I’d known since high school.. A thing I admired about Joc was he could effectively use both sides of his brain. He was good at math. He was interested in literature was and writer of poetry. He was a lifelong active learner, integrating what he learned into his life. REST IN PEACE, OLD FRIEND.
