In Loving Memory

James Thomas "Jim" Fletcher

October 7, 1953 – November 22, 2022

James Thomas (“Jim”) Fletcher, 69, of Friendswood, Texas passed away on November 22, 2022 . Jim was born in Pilot Point, Texas on Oct. 7, 1953, to Shelby and Mary Ann Fletcher.  He grew up in Gainesville, Texas, moving to Houston in 1964.  Graduating from Milby High School in 1971 and the University of Houston, magna cum laude, in 1974, Jim went on to receive his JD at South Texas College of Law in 1977 and began his 45-year practice of law.  In 1978 he married Cindy Day of Pasadena, and they had one daughter, Molly Elizabeth.

A talented musician, singer, piano player and trumpeter, Jim polished his music skills at UH with the marching Band and Cougar Brass, in the process becoming a life-long dedicated fan of the UH Coogs.   His singing career spanned over half a century, serving as song leader and worship leader at numerous churches of Christ in the Houston area, most recently at Clear Lake.  Involvement in worship led to participation in the establishment of the Houston Area Worship Leaders Conference and involvement with the Texas Normal Singing School, where he served as an instructor, legal counsel and board member.  His dedication to the church was evident in his service as a deacon, teacher, mentor and member at Park Place, Southeast and Clear Lake churches.

His heart for service extended in the community to the South Belt Optimist Club, where he served on the Board of Directors and as President, and to local softball and track organizations.   An avid genealogist, his love of family tree research was well known in the family and gave him great joy.  A true Renaissance man, Jim’s interests also included history and archaeology, particularly the Civil War era; Texas plants and trees; Texas high school and college sports, especially football and basketball; old trains; and collecting historical hymnbooks and singing materials.

Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cindy, and daughter Molly Elizabeth, always his pride and joy; sister Susan Jones and brother-in-law David Jones; nieces Kayla Jones and Nicole Gray; nephew Derek Jones; and numerous cousins and extended relatives whom he was very close to.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby and Mary Ann Fletcher, and nephew Brandon Guillory.

Loved by so many, Jim will be deeply missed by family, friends, colleagues, and fellow Christians.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Clear Lake Church of Christ, 938 El Dorado Blvd., Houston, Texas.

Condolences may be sent to the Fletcher family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

I called him Jim. I called him recently. I did not get a call back from him. Not like the Jim that I have known since
1980. He was such a kind and understanding and patient
person. Not like any other attorney. I had just lost my soul mate and I was blessed to have Jim as my attorney. I am so sorry to learn about his death. My sincere condolences to the family. He is really missed. 💐
