April 3, 1947-September 18, 2026
James “Jim” Edward Tinney, 79, passed away on September 18, 2026. Jim was a proud United States Army Veteran and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Pasadena, where he was active in various committees as well as the choir.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Douglas “AD” Tinney and Rowena Montgomery Tinney, and his sister, Doris Jean “DJ” Calhoun.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Phyllis Pesl Tinney; sons Douglas Tinney and wife Julie, and Mark Tinney and wife Candace; grandchildren Presley Jo, Logan Michael, Peyton James, Lennox Mae, Landon Moore, and Parker Jett; sister Jeanette Wennenweser and husband Max; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Jim was deeply devoted to his family and took great pride in being actively involved in his sons’ activities, including PTA, Scouting and FFA. One of his greatest points of pride was watching his two sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Through these activities, Jim formed many lifelong friendships.
He was an avid sports fan who faithfully followed the Oilers, Astros, and Texans. Jim also had a lifelong passion for automobiles and enjoyed owning and appreciating many different cars and trucks over the years. In his later years, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures, often spending time playing solitaire with his loyal corgi, Lizzie, faithfully resting at his feet.
Jim will be remembered for his love of family, faith, country, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Tinney family,
We are very sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. We enjoyed the time we were able to visit with Jim and see the joy he had watching his grandchildren play! Our sincere condolences.

We love you, Grandpa!!!
The Tinney Family,
Please accept the deepest condolences of the Helfrich branch of the Tinney family tree. Jimmy (and Doris Jean and Jeanette) were raised alongside the five Helfrich children–and were/are loved like siblings.
I write on their behalf because Alzheimer’s has robbed each of them of the ability to voice what I know is deep love and affection for Jimmy, for sweet Phyllis (and her thoughtful cards) and for your family.
Our hearts are with you as you mourn a wonderful husband, father and friend. Jimmy was always sweet and steady, with a puckish sense of humor and the ability to talk Houston sports and cars all the livelong day. That his faith was deep was obvious in how he lived his life and in the wonderful family he and Phyllis built. We hold our happy memories of him close and look forward to a reunion in Heaven.
Love and hugs galore to you at this difficult time,
Jacqueline Pontello for my mother Carol and for Raymond, Mary Beth (aka Susie) and Rosemary

He was a great and fun uncle! I have many memories of the “coca cola” pants he brought me, his varied cars in my lifetime including the “carpeted” blue van and being able to drive his Pontiac TransAm and then the El Dorado while I was a high schooler. He got the family hooked on Pembroke Welsh Corgis. And we all love them too. God has you in hand, Uncle Jimmy. Prayers of peace, sympathy and condolences to Aunt Phyllis, Doug, Mark and extended crews. Love you all.
The whole family is in our prayers as Jim is in the loving hands of our Lord.
Phyllis, I am so sorry for the loss of Jim. My prayers are with you and your entire family. Please know that my brothers, sisters, are I are always thinking of y’all and you’re always in our hearts. Love, Ronnie
We are so sorry to hear this news. We have such wonderful memories of sharing the Barn Manager with him at the FFA barn. He was always a gentleman and truly a real ‘gentle man’. Our thoughts, prayers and love go out to Phyllis, Doug, and Mark and the entire Tinney family. God has received a new angel to watch over y’all always.
Love and Blessings,
Wesley and Barbara Verzinski
I knew Jim from Grocers Supply. Jim worked pretty hard in that role and dedicated himself to providing support to Independent Grocers. It was back breaking work but Jim always left those Independent grocers better than he found them. I worked in the office but Jim would stop in when he was in the building, offering suggestions when we needed straightened out. I will miss Jim. RIP my friend.
Phyllis & all
I worked with Jim & his Mom when he had his auto shop in Alvin & Mount Houston. I sold tire supplies & he sold tires .
He was a gentle soul
Rest in peace Jim

It is with a heavy heart we send our deepest condolences to the Tinney family. We have enjoyed our time with Jim, getting together at family parties, and as of recent, all of us watching and cheering on Logan , Mutton Bustin. May he rest in peace.
