In Loving Memory

Fredrick John Petersen

June 27, 1928 – September 13, 2021

Fredrick John Petersen passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 13, 2021, following a life of service to our Lord Jesus Christ.  He was born in Cordova, Nebraska on June 27, 1928 to the Reverend William and Marie Petersen.

He received his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Concordia Teacher’s College in Seward, Nebraska.  Fred moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1960 and began teaching at Zion Lutheran Church where he also served as Music Director.  Fred also helped start a mission congregation that met in a classroom at San Jacinto Jr. College and was ultimately established as Christ Redeemer Lutheran Church in La Porte, Texas. In 1974, he moved to the public school system teaching mathematics at Southmore Jr. High and later at Sam Rayburn High School in the Pasadena Independent School District.  After retiring from PISD, he obtained his real estate agent license and worked as a real estate agent for a short period of time.

Fred had a desire for learning to play the piano from a very young age, which became a passion of his throughout his life.  In addition to becoming an accomplished pianist, he served as organist and choir director for several Lutheran congregations.  He continued his organ study late in his career at the University of Houston, where he received his Master’s degree in Organ Performance.

Fred enjoyed spending time with family, as well as his hobby of fishing.  Even late in his life you could find him fishing for flounder in the fall on the banks of Pelican Island in Galveston.

He was preceded in death by his loving and dedicated wife Loyce of 54 years, his parents, and brothers Reverend William, Art, Ray, Vic, Erwin, Paul, and Reverend Robert.  He is survived by his brother Don, sons David and wife Dawn of Houston, Texas, and Jonathan and wife Junelle of Friendswood, Texas, and granddaughters Carissa of Houston, Texas and Kayla and husband Lukas of League City, Texas.

Friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation with family on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church, 1804 South Friendswood Dr, Friendswood, Texas, 77546, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM with Reverend Ralph Hobratschk officiating.  A graveside service will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Freeway (I-45), Webster, Texas, 77598.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doves Home Care Agency and mailed to 302 Windsor Drive, Friendswood, Texas, 77546.

Condolences may be sent to the Petersen family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

I wanted to express my sympathy for your loss. I always think of Fred taking his daily walks around our neighborhood here in Dickinson. I always enjoyed talking to both Loyce and Fred. Interesting lives. Miss them both.

  2. Mr. Fred was my teacher at Zion Lutheran in the early 60s. He taught me how to read music in the 3rd grade. I have fond memories of the operettas he had us do each year. I loved his choir and the challenging music. We learned pieces in German and Latin. Because of his instruction in my early years I received a gift that continues to bless my life more than 50 years later. May the Lord comfort you until you are reunited.

I am unable to be with you today except in my heart. Jim and I have fond memories of my Uncle Fred. For me, he was sensitive, strong and kind. I love Uncle Fred and have dear memories to hold in my heart.
