September 11, 1929 – March 18, 2026
Catherine Ann Coker was born on September 11, 1929, in the Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas, the only child of Dorothy and James Mayfield. She was deeply loved, especially by her seven uncles, and cherished the summers she spent with her father in Mississippi. She attended Reagan High School, and as a young girl, she loved ice skating and fondly recalled afternoons spent with friends, dancing around her Victrola.
In 1949, Catherine met and married Guy Coker, beginning a life filled with family and adventure. They welcomed their children, Tim in 1953 and Andrea in 1957. Guy’s career took the family to Beaumont, Houston, El Lago, and Lake Jackson, where they raised their children and created lasting memories in their home on Oyster Creek.
In 1972, Catherine and Guy settled in Friendswood, where they planted roots for retirement and built a vibrant, close-knit community. Catherine was active in the Friendswood Garden Club, owned and operated The Arbor antiques shop, and formed many lifelong friendships. She loved hosting happy hours, tending to her garden, and bringing people together.
Later in life, Catherine continued to embrace companionship and joy. She shared many years with Brad Bradbury until his death, and later many more with Pat McGuire, whom she held dear. Together, they enjoyed day trips to Galveston, especially visits to the Grand Opera House and exploring the local dining scene.
Catherine had a lifelong love for animals, welcoming countless dogs and cats who found their way to her doorstep. She was a devoted grandmother—“Mimi”—to Elise and Deanna, and a proud great-grandmother to Avienne, Jack, Violet, Holland, and Vada.
Her life was enriched by many dear friendships, including Mitzi McEwen, Mary Majors, Judy Hamlet, Brenda Erfurdt, and Sheila Skidmore, who remained close to her through the years.
Catherine passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on March 18, 2026, at the age of 96.
She will be remembered as a true social butterfly—someone who loved a good conversation over coffee, kept up with current events, and found joy in making memories with those she loved most.
Friends are invited to a memorial service on March 31st, 2026 at 11:00am at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home. 311 N Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546
