William Hampton McDaniel

November 21, 1955 – October 20, 2024

William “Billy Mac” McDaniel of Pearland, Texas passed away October 20, 2024 at the age of 68. Billy Mac was born November 21, 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee to Evangeline and William McDaniel, MD. When Mac was 5, the family moved to Alvin, Texas where he graduated from Alvin High School in 1974. As a child he immersed himself into sports, especially football. Mac took his passion for athletics to college where he played receiver at the University of Tennessee Martin graduating in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.

Fondly referred to as “Coach” by his younger brother Patrick, it was no secret the passion “Coach Mac” had for football and the student athletes he taught. Throughout his career he shaped the lives of many as coach and friend at both the collegiate and high school level: University of Texas El Paso, Murray State University, Illinois State University and high school (Texas): Santa Fe, Clear Lake, Cleburne, (Sparta, Tennessee): White County High School.

On gameday and even before, Billy Mac could be found cheering on his beloved Tennessee Volunteers and spending time with his loved ones. He is survived by his daughters: Chenay Strum and Hailey Archer, grandchildren: Watson Strum, Rowan Strum, Elliot Archer, Liam Archer, siblings: Rhonda Keithley, Patrick McDaniel and many nieces and nephews who love him dearly.

Loved by all who knew him, Mac will be missed by many. #17 will be in our hearts forever.

  8. My condolences to his family and friends. I thought a lot of Coach Mac. He was a coach at Seabrook Intermediate around the 79-80's. There was a lot of silly non-sense with the boys in physical education. Coach Mac always had it well in-hand.

Coach Mac, Thank you for teaching us how to win and never give to give up the fight. It served me well in the Marines amd the rest of my life. My best Coach Mac Memory at Clear Lake was we played Pearland and Clear Lake beat the Peaand Oilers 99 to 0 and that week someone washed our uniforms and turn then pink and we had to play with pink uniforms. The other team called us sissies. And Coach Mac huddled us up told us to hit them so hard that they will fear these pink unforms and respect our football. We knocked there blocks off and they lost every time Coach Mac was head of the team. Rip Coach Bill Mac windsprints are over and Heaven Awaits You for you have ran your race and won your prize

  16. Unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to experience your life as an accomplished coach, but I do recall you as Rhonda’s little brother, back when we were all young children. Congratulations on all of your athletic prowess on Earth as you enter the Heavenly Coaching Hall of Fame. Old coaches never die (even the younger ones), they just move them to administrative positions!! Say hello to Coach York for us.
