July 23, 1948 – January 18, 2023
Steven Vaughn Unger was born on July 23, 1948 to George William "Bill” Unger, and Wynogene Sudduth in San Angelo Texas. He was the first of two sons, big brother to Mark Unger. Christened by the Reverend V. Bouinghausen on August 29, 1948, at the Lutheran Church. He and his brother Mark enjoyed a typical small Texas town upbringing, raised by both parents, taking guitar lessons in '61, as well as piano lessons in '62. Steve excelled in football too where he made many lifelong friends.
Steve graduated from Big Springs high school, class of '66. He kept in touch with the friends he made there, by whom he will be greatly missed. He was so very happy to have recently attended his 50-year high school reunion with his loving girlfriend, Beth Ledbetter just last year.
Along with being a master machinist, who would often be out in his shop "tinkering around" as he put it, had a lifelong career he was very proud of in the oil field. He was greatly known for his incredible work ethic. The oil field allowed Steve to travel the world, often going overseas, even seeing the great pyramids of Egypt.
However, his favorite place to be always seemed to be at home with friends, and family here in Friendswood Texas who are all heartbroken by his sudden passing at age 74 on January 18th this year by way of a heart attack. Especially by his only child, Debra with whom he was very close to her whole life, and girlfriend Beth who was very happily with him for his remaining years. He was greatly liked and known throughout our community. An avid patron at our Friendswood library, and often doing small jobs in his machine shop for people. He very much loved the many close friends he has made on Portage Ln., and could often be found playing dominoes, and drinking margaritas with some of his closest friends, Billy and Pam Terry. He was lucky enough to enjoy his retirement from the oilfield beginning in 2019 with them, and always very much looked forward to his visits with girlfriend Beth who would come down as often as she could for several weeks at a time to visit.
He was preceded in death by Mother Wynogene, Father "Bill" Unger, as well as his only grandchild Corbin Shelton, who sadly passed away at the tender age of 13.
He is survived by his brother Mark Unger, who sadly could not be here today, but is heartbroken over the loss of his big brother. Girlfriend, Beth Ledbetter whom he loved greatly, and although they were sadly his final years, her love for him made them some of his very best years. His daughter Debra who he shared a wonderful, and loving relationship with throughout her life, as well as her husband Shane, which he loved and was very close with as well, bonding over their love of fast cars.
All his many friends he so easily made over the years will all miss him deeply, as he touched the hearts of many. He had had a loving heart and was always the first to help friends in need whenever he could. May he rest in peace.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Friday, February 17, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Tx. 77546 (281) 992-7200 with Rev. Jerry Stark officiating.

Deborah, this is Reagan and Zack Murray's mother. Your father was a wonderful man. He helped us with so many things. I still have the 2 different sets of wooden silhouettes that he made of Reagan and Zack hanging on my wall. Both Reagan and Zack were very sad when I told them the sad news. Please know that we was a kind and generous man who helped out those in need. He will be missed.
Thank u so much Kathy, that really means so much to me….sincerely….
