May 24, 1937 – January 18, 2024
Sara Evans Red passed away at home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 18, 2024, following a lengthy illness.
Sara Bess Evans was born May 24, 1937, in Alvin, Texas, to parents John Crunk Evans and Bessie Lacy Evans. She grew up in Alvin, graduating from Alvin High School in 1955 where she had been a champion baton twirler.
Sara met a charming, handsome lifeguard named Wally who worked at the Alvin swimming pool while he was home one summer from the University of Texas. Soon after on January 28, 1956, Sara and Wally were married at Grace Episcopal Church in Alvin, Texas. They lived briefly in Austin and then in Houston before settling in Alvin to raise their family.
As a young woman, Sara focused herself on her husband, children, community, and friends. She was active in her church and volunteered at her children’s schools. She was an enthusiastic supporter of any activity or sport in which her children were involved. Sara loved to cook and was an accomplished seamstress. Wally built an entire sewing room where she would work for hours making clothes and quilts for herself, her children, and grandchildren, and curtains for the house. Sara was a devoted mother of her four children, and for eighteen years of her life, she cared for at least one child under the age of 5 in the home.
After all her children started school, Sara worked as a legal secretary for attorneys Powell and Brownstein in Pearland. She always loved spending time with friends and family and loved fun and laughter. Sara was an avid bridge player and was very proud to have achieved the level of bridge Life Master.
In their retirement, Wally and Sara loved to travel, go on biking trips, and visit their children and grandchildren. Sara became very health conscious with her cooking, and she power walked every morning for years. In 2000, they moved to Georgetown and became very active in their community and church there. They were devoted supporters of the athletic programs of the University of Texas and went to many, many games, and events. The Longhorns had no bigger fan than Sara Red. Half of her wardrobe was burnt orange and white; and at any event, no one was louder than Sara, except for maybe her sister-in-law Becky.
Sara was most proud of her children, grandchildren, and their accomplishments. She taught them to stay focused and to always do their best. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and arranged weeks for them to stay with “Mamaw”. Developing relationships with them as individuals was very important to her. She would spend hours teaching and playing card games with them.
Sara is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Richard Wallace Red, Jr.; their children, Richard Wallace Red, III and his wife Vanessa Red, John Clark Red and his wife Gayle Red, David Douglas Red, and Rachel Red Matthews and her husband Chuck Matthews; her twin brother, John William Evans and his wife Carolyn Evans; grandchildren, Ben Kilpatrick and his wife Katie Kilpatrick, Taylor Kilpatrick Hamm and her husband Chris Hamm, Miles Larkin and his wife Susan Larkin, Kelsey Red White and her husband Avery White, Anastasija Red Pringle and her husband Evan Pringle, Olivia Red Auzenne and her husband Steven Auzenne, Beverly Red, Anabelle Matthews, Charlie Matthews, and Lucy Matthews; great-grandchildren, Jack Kilpatrick, Will Kilpatrick, Amelia Larkin, Robert Larkin, Aurora Hamm, Caleb White, and Thomas Larkin.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents Bessie Lacy Evans and John Crunk Evans, her older brother USAF SSgt Robbert Kirby Evans, and her sister-in-law Becky Stuart Red.
The funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M, on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church, 200 W. Lang St., Alvin, Texas, 77511.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Grace Episcopal Church, 200 W. Lang St., Alvin, Texas 77511 or Grace Episcopal Church, 1314 E. University Ave., Georgetown, Texas 78626.
Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

Dear Wally and family, we send our deepest condolences on the loss of Sara. I loved Sara for the wonderful woman she was. She was down to earth and had a can-do spirit. She had a heart to care for others and often worried about others. She was a mother to more than just her children. I remember a wonderful meal she gave us after Priscilla was born and some really delicious cookies she made us after we moved in. She was a talented cook and baker. I'll always remember the 2 of you together, Wally and Sara. Wally, you were constantly supporting Sara and Sara was constantly trying to keep up with you. Wilbur and I were blessed to have you as neighbors and your marriage is an example of enduring love. We miss you both, and will always remember Sara.
