August 22, 1943 – September 18, 2024
With great sadness we announce the passing of Rosalyn Wukman Schoppa on September 18, 2024, after a short illness. Rosalyn, born on August 22, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, was the daughter of Alexander Steve Wukman and Opal Graves Wukman. She attended Bellaire High School and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Houston.
In 1967, Rosalyn married Walter Edward Schoppa, and they were happily married for 57 years, settling in Friendswood, Texas. She enjoyed teaching English at junior high and high school, then English and literature courses at the university level for several years before retiring in 2010. Her favorite works to teach were written by American authors, especially pieces by Henry David Thoreau, Robert Frost, and Emily Dickinson. She wrote constantly, everything from reflective essays and poems to cards and letters.
Rosalyn had a talent for sewing and crafts. She was highly skilled with crochet hooks and quilting needles. She used her gift to serve others by making hundreds of baby blankets for the Gabriel Project and for anyone she knew that was having a baby. She was passionate about her Catholic faith, never missing a Sunday mass, volunteering at her church's food pantry, enjoying faith sharing groups, and providing meals to families in need. She enjoyed weekly visits to the public library and loved to read, especially historical novels. However, her greatest joy came from being a mother and grandmother.
She loved her family and instilled strong values in her children, believed wholeheartedly in them, and hailed their talents. Her advice to us was to rely on our faith, always take life one day at a time, and "not to worry." Perhaps her most important role and one she did remarkably well was being a caregiver to our Dad during the last few years. She was stronger than she would admit and braver than she realized, always able to demonstrate patience and compassion. We will always be grateful for her love and devotion to Dad and us.
Rosalyn is survived by her husband Walter, son Derek (Cherie), daughters Stacy (Clayton Cutchall) and Susan (Clark Clawson); grandchildren Caden, Caroline, Emma, and Adam; siblings, Carolyn Dessens, Marilyn Jansen, and Steve Wukman; cousins, nieces, and nephews. After a private family service, her final resting place will be at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas.
Rosalyn will be dearly missed, but her faithfulness and love will remain with us forever.
