Robert James Blackwell

February 3, 1936 – May 4, 2023

Robert James Blackwell, age 87, of Shoreacres, Texas passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 peacefully in his home, surrounded by family as they sang “What a friend we have in Jesus” to send him home. Bob was born in Houston, Texas on February 2, 1936 and is a graduate of LaPorte High School and attended Lee College. He worked 37 years at Houston Lighting & Power Company starting as a lineman, then a foreman, and eventually a supervisor.

As an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Bob was a former Sunday school teacher and loved attending worship services on Sundays. He enjoyed playing poker with his Gloria Dei brethren and was a member of the Crown of Life small group. Bob was also president of the LaPorte Senior Center and helped organize events, day trips and games. He loved to play cards, dominos and bean bag baseball with many friends at the center. It brought him much joy to help others at the center, donate prizes for games and even took a group to see the Lion King Musical in Houston.

Spending time with his family was his highest priority. Despite having it being large, he made sure to spend time with everyone. He always provided support and love to each one of them, and was known as the “rock” of the family. He cared deeply for his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren as they were his pride & joy. Bob was able to spend many holidays with his family, while taking many family vacations, and attending sporting events.

Bob was preceded by his parents Cecil Voils Blackwell and Alice Josephine and his wife Edra Elwynn Wilds.

He is survived by son Robert J. Blackwell Jr., daughter-in-law Debbie Blackwell, son Kevin Blackwell, daughter-in-law DeeAnn Blackwell, daughter Jennifer Massar, son-in-law Joseph Massar. Grandchildren Kimbra Tettenhorst, husband James Tettenhorst,Tamara Carroll, husband Tommy Carroll, Robyn Blackwell, Robert J. Blackwell III, Lauren Mason, husband Christian Mason, and Ashley Massar. Great grandchildren are Kaden Profili, Jayse Tettenhorst, Kaylee Profili, Finley Carroll, Aria Carroll, and Aurora Mason. His sister Cecilia Bridges, brother-in-law Larry Bridges, brother Michael Blackwell, sister-in-law Debbie Blackwell, sister Mary Kay Green and sister Alice Karen Keese.

Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Tim 77546 (281) 992-7200.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 18220 Upper Bay Rd., Houston, Texas 77058 with Pastor Dan Schepmann officiating.  Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Bob’s honor may do so to the Gloria Dei Endowment Fund.

  1. We send our deepest sympathy to Bob’s family and Olive.. May the peace of God’s endless love carry everyone through this difficult trial. We truly loved the Godly man that Bob was and will miss him very much. The world was definitely a better place with him in it but now we have peace knowing that he is in his final resting place with Jesus in Heaven.
