Matilde Nieto Montemayor, 95, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in the hospital on October 27, 2022.
Matilde was born on March 14, 1927, in Ben Arnold, Texas, to Maria Juarez Nieto and Jesus Nieto. She was the second of six children. Matilde moved to Sabinas, Hidalgo in Mexico with her family when she was five years old. She attended primary and secondary school and became a seamstress and learned machine embroidery and monograming after completing a trade school. At 18, she started her own embroidery trade school in her town and taught hundreds of the girls for 7 years.
Matilde returned to Houston, Texas in 1952 and immediately put her embroidery talents to work at a downtown retail store. In 1954, she attended an English as a Second Language school where she met Amadeo Montemayor. They were married in 1955.
Matilde and Amadeo had four children: Maria Theresa Montemayor, Amadeo Montemayor Jr. (Melissa), James Montemayor (Julie) and Gerardo “Jerry” Montemayor. She had three grandchildren: Alex, Mark and Ryan. Matilde lost her youngest child (Jerry) in 1997; followed by her husband (Amadeo) in 1999. She lost her father in 1981 and her mother in 1983; along with her brothers Jose, Arturo, Juan and Jesus Manuel in the following years.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her sister, Maria Davila, nieces and nephews and extended family.
Matilde and the Montemayor Family have been members of Mary Queen Catholic Church since the mid- 90’s.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. with the Rosary Service to begin at 7:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 with Deacon Chuck Turner officiating.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 with Rev. James H. Kuczynski, M.S. officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas. Please join the family for a reception following the interment at Mary Queen Catholic Church Retreat House, Mary’s House.

I met Matilde at Mary Queen Catholic Church. She was a kind and beautiful person that I will always remember.
She gave me a prayer book to read before mass which I still read.
