In Loving Memory

Marilyn Jane Hansen Abbe

October 26, 1932 – May 23, 2024

Marilyn Jane Abbe died peacefully on May 23, 2024 at 9:30 AM after a very short illness, in League City, Texas.  Marilyn was born 91 years ago in Trenton, Missouri to Ava L (Brooks) and Leon Hansen.   Marilyn grew up in Colorado and moved to Tularosa, New Mexico in 1956 with her husband and her children Christine and Larry. Marilyn and her children loved the mountains in New Mexico.

Some years later in 1960, Marilyn went to work as a civil servant at Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo, New Mexico.  She was secretary to a group of German Scientists who had come to the US after WWII to work on the American Rocket program.   She found the work and the people very interesting.

While at Holloman, she met and married Marty Abbe who was there working for Dynalectron on NASA aircraft during the Apollo project.  Marty’s work took him to Ellington Field, Texas. The family moved to Friendswood with Marty in 1968.

Marilyn went to work at Johnson Space Center around 1970.  She was division secretary in the Safety and Reliability Division until her retirement in 1984. These were big changes from living in a small town in rural New Mexico, to suburban Houston and Freeways.

Marilyn and Marty loved to travel and each of them traveled some for work.  They were able to combine work and travel sometimes which they enjoyed.

Marilyn learned of dance lessons being given at the Gilruth Center at Johnson Space Center.  She and Marty signed up and so did lots of their friends.  Marilyn loved to dance and they soon belonged to two local dance clubs.  They had such fun dancing with all their friends.

Both were active in the Friendswood Methodist Church.  Marilyn was active with Marty in the Arabia Shrine activities.

Marilyn was never happier than when she was planning a party or a vacation.  She loved travel and went on many trips with her family and friends.

Shortly before her death, she said she’d had a long happy life.  Thank God for that.

Marilyn loved being around people and had many long time friends who were very dear to her.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Marty Abbe, her parents, her sister Margaret, her son Larry and great grandson Andrew Phillip Borden.  She is survived by her daughter Christine Borden and husband Lance Borden, grandchildren Jason Borden and Randall Borden, great-grandchildren Zachary Borden, Kayleigh Borden, Victoria Fontenot and Shyla Burgess.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Friendswood Methodist Church, 110 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 with Rev. Howard Huhn officiating.

Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

  1. I am so sorry to find that Marilyn has passed away. I discovered that her phone had been disconnected yesterday. We were high school friends and she and I with our husbands enjoyed travel together years ago. She always enjoyed our time on the phone in these later years. 2. I discovered this weekend that Marilyn’s phone was disconnected. I checked for obituaries this morning at League City, Texas and was saddened to see Marilyn’s obituary. We were high school friends and enjoyed our friendship over the years. We traveled together with our husbands and spent time together at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Marilyn and I had our pictures taken with Santa Claus at the Broadmoor. She was the consummate friend. Greta Pollard, Class of 1950 Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.
