March 22, 1957 – May 20, 2025
Maria Virginia Cortez Ybarra, age 68, of Houston, TX passed from this life peacefully surrounded by her family, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Maria was born on March 22, 1957, in Abilene, TX to the late Ralph Cortez and Rosa Wiley.
She is preceded by her mother and father (Ralph and Rosa), her stepsisters; Nanette Garcia, Nora Garcia Hessels and is survived by her husband Antonio Ybarra; daughter Gabriella Ybarra Posey (husband Mackenzie); brother Michael Cortez (wife Mary); stepsisters Melinda Wiley and Suzette Cortez Gray; granddaughters Myra and Zoe Posey, and many dearly beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and lifelong friends.
Maria worked hard to receive her GED in 1975. She went to work for Allstate Insurance Company. She remained there for 32 years and retired thereafter. During her time of retirement Maria took time to help care for her sick mother. When Rosa passed away, she decided to return to work and became employed at Germania Insurance Company as a Senior Claims Representative, she loved her work family and always spoke highly of the company and her co-workers.
Maria’s main joy was spending time with her daughter and granddaughters; they were her heart. She also enjoyed what became a yearly tradition (to her and her daughter) …visiting the Houston Nutcracker Market. She was an active volunteer at Dobie High School for numerous years (always in support of her beloved daughter). Maria was an entrepreneur and enjoyed crafting in various areas (her brother nicknamed her the “mum” lady due to her specialty in creating homecoming mums).
Maria had a strong faith in her Savior Jesus Christ, she was also known for her compassionate, adventurous spirit and fun-loving heart. Maria was always ready to help family and friends in need; she is considered the Matriarch of the family. To have known Maria was to be exceedingly blessed.
Special thanks to Germania Insurance Company for being so wonderful to Maria and her family in this time of need.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 10:00 am with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 am at Jeter Funeral Home, 311 N Friendswood Dr, Friendswood, TX 77546.

Maria was Indeed a Blessing to those who knew her. She was a good friend with a beautiful smile. I'll always remember spending our lunch hours at Allstate together and celebrating our birthdays together
Praying for Tony, Gabbie and all of her family. May your hearts be full of happy memories and the love she had for you.
It was a joy to know and work with Maria. She was a special part of out Complex claims tram. She will always be in our hearts. My condolences to your family. She will most definitely be missed.
Tony & Gabie, I was very saddened to hear of Maria's sudden and unexpected passing. We worked together a lifetime ago at Allstate. We had some great times, traveling together when we were still in our 20's. She was at our wedding. She had such a radiant smile, a wicked hilarious laughter, and a good heart. It's been a while since we had talked. We hope you find peace through God's grace during this time of grieving. Dianna & Bill Furlan
I’m very sorry for your loss. I worked with Maria at Allstate and later at Germania. She loved her family and was so proud of her daughter and granddaughters. Sending our heart felt condolences.
