June 21, 1957 – September 26, 2021
Kimberly Sue Shapiro Haugen was born on June 21,1957 in Galveston, Texas. She grew up near Clear Lake City, Texas and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1975. She later earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology from The University of Houston and spent much of her professional life working for Boeing as an engineer. Later in life she devoted much of her time to being a Children’s Leader and then Class Administrator for her Bible Study Fellowship group. However, there wasn’t a job she loved more than being a wife and mother.
Kim is survived by her husband, David Haugen, her four children, Joshua Kise, Hannah Farraro, George Haugen, and Michele Haugen, and her two brothers, Michael and Lee Shapiro. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Beverley and Aubrey Shapiro.
On February 14, 1996, Kim married David, the love of her life, and they spent the next 25 years and then some writing a beautiful love story that included finding Jesus Christ and raising their children together, whom she loved dearly. Kim and David were a real-life example of true love and devotion to God.
Kim enjoyed a vast variety of hobbies and talents including gardening, hiking, cooking, needlework, jigsaw puzzles, painting, crafts, and most of all talking to others about the love of Jesus and the salvation He brings. She was an exceptionally skilled photographer, and she began adding Bible verses to her pictures. What began as a hobby quickly turned into a calling from God, resulting in a life’s work of nearly 1000 photographs with God’s word on them. She turned many of these photos into various items to give away to spread the word of God to others, such as bookmarks, cards, and photo books.
In 2003, Kim was first diagnosed with breast cancer and faced a long, difficult path to recovery, if at all. While this seemed like an ending, it was actually the beginning of her and much of her family’s relationship with God and their acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Her faith grew to where in 2011 when she was diagnosed with a recurrence, she, rather than walking away from God, asked Him “What do you want me to learn from this one, Lord?" She rooted herself deeper into His strength, becoming baptized in 2014, and devoted herself more to Bible Study Fellowship and her ministry with scripture pictures. Even in the face of another recurrence diagnosis in 2019 that she fought until the end, her faith never wavered.
She was the epitome of faithfulness, gratitude, love, and selflessness. She truly loved life and saw the good in everything and everyone. She was so grateful and at peace with all she was given in her life. Even at very difficult and painful times during her illness, her gratitude and faith never wavered. She continually showed extreme fortitude and endurance. The battle that she fought to have as much time as possible with her family was extraordinary. The number of times doctors were proven wrong and she experienced miraculous results during her journey with cancer was remarkable, all thanks to the power of God.
After almost two decades since her original diagnosis, Kim passed away peacefully at her earthly home on September 26, 2021 surrounded by her husband and children. She was able to experience so many milestones and memories that she and her family never expected to have, and now she has gone to her eternal heavenly home. In her own words near the end, “This is perfect."
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Clear Creek Community Church (Clear Lake Campus), 16743 Diana Lane, Houston, Texas 77062, with Pastor Chris Alston officiating.

Dear David,
Kim's obituary is beautiful. My wife, Michelle and I will continue to pray for Kim and your family. In Kim's memory, we are pleased to have made a donation to compassion.com and to sponsor a young Ethiopan boy named Tsinat. We have sponsored two children through another religious organization and welcome the opportunity to add Tsinat in Kim's honor — her good kindness and good works continue on this Earth as they surely do in heaven. God Bless you all.
Best,
Rob and Michelle McCauley
I am so heartbroken to here of Kim's passing, I worked with her at Boeing, Kim was an amazing engineer, she would always volunteer when asked to take our EMU Suits to schools for show and tells, kids flocked to her, she was so creative, always had a smile and always helpful to anyone who asked, she loved get togethers with family and friends, she was fun to be around. when she first met David, she was like a school girl again, and whenever she talked about their long phone conversations her smile would light up a room. we lost touch over the years, family children, but she will always be a special person to alot of people and so fondly remembered, My heart and prayers go out to her family.
So sad to hear of Kim’s passing. Although it has been many years since we worked together at Boeing I can still recall her smiling face and willingness to help anyone. Her energy and smile are what I remember best about Kim.
