May 1957 – February 2022
John Richard Hamman of Friendswood Texas was born in May 1957 in West Texas to Jerry and Jeanette Hamman. John passed away on February 18, 2022 at the age of 64.
John and his family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was 9 years old. John graduated high school from O Perry Walker in 1975 where he played both football and baseball.
He graduated from The University of Southwestern Louisiana with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980. John intended to be a City Manager like his namesake grandfather but after graduating college, John started working in the oil and gas industry and then found himself in the new up and coming field of Hazardous Waste Management. His various roles in Project Management took him all over the Country and he held Contractors Licenses in several states. His ability to memorize and recite the cumbersome state and federal regulations, along with his desire to protect, led him to positions in Health and Safety and Compliance; a role he took very seriously for both his fellow co-workers and employers.
John had 2 sons from his first marriage to Annie Leonard, Jeremy John and Christopher Graham. John later married Tia Gottas-Hamman in 1992, where his fabulous hugs sealed the deal. They lived in California for many years before moving to Texas in 2001. They have had several fur babies, including, most recently, Mooshon, Brody and Bacchus.
John loved life. He was devious, always instigating and looking for a laugh. He was affectionately known as Hack, Bub, Honey Bun, Hambone, The Hammer, and of course, his favorite, Pops.
John loved playing, watching and following sports. While he was always ready to go fishing or golfing, his favorite hobby was cooking. He greatly enjoyed making people happy with his food and finely honing his recipes. He was known for his gumbo, etouffee, corn and sausage chowder, crawfish, shrimp salad, and many, many more delicious dishes. He also recently branched out into baking and candy making. Many a pound will be shed with the loss of his meals and treats.
John was preceded in death by his father, Jerry. He is survived by his wife, Tia, mother, Jeanette, son Jeremy and wife Keelah, son Christopher and wife Brittney, grandson Arlo, granddaughters Maeve and Harriet, brother Jeff and wife Kathy (who John was great friends with for over 50 years), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for John at the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (pulmonaryfibrosis.org), Get Involved, Honor a Loved One, Find a Tribute. They are listed alphabetically by first name or you can search by name.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 (281) 992-7200 with Rev. Heather Gottas-Moore officiating.
A Celebration of Life will be held following the service at John and Tia’s home.

John was a childhood friend, classmate and teammate in New Orleans. He had a wild streak and always a smile. We had a paper route together as kids and I remember folding papers at 4:30,am in his den, with the help of his father Jerry. We played football together and we were part of a sub-group of six players who were all friends. We were called the “wrecking crew”. I have a photo of that group and it shows John in his familiar stance and expression. I’ll try to post it.
Hack was a very dear friend in college. I’m so sad to hear this news. My condolences to his family. He was a good man.
