April 28, 1936 – January 15, 2024

Joe Ochoa was born in Wharton, Texas, on April 28, 1936. Son of Joe Ochoa & Lillian Aldrete. Joe spent his childhood in Galveston, Texas with his brothers Pete, Rudy, Johnny (Juanito), Adam, and sisters Lucy, Delores (Tiny), and Mary. Life in Galveston was challenging yet filled with many good memories. The Ochoa family have a strong bond. Joe was there for those who needed him and had the love and support of his family.

Joe enlisted in the US Navy when he turned 18, months within the end of the Korean War. He was sent to foreign waters post-war – brave and honorable in his duties. He continued his career path in the Merchant Marines Reserves shipping out to many exotic ports in Europe, South America, India, and Pakistan.

During this time Joe married Armida Jimenez and together they have three children, Sabrina, Larry, and Natalie.

Joe continued his maritime career by obtaining a commercial Captain's License. In the early 1970s, he moved to San Francisco, California.

Joe was very much a people person and enjoyed being 'Captain Ochoa' for the “Red & White Fleet” at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Franscisco; meeting people from all walks of life. One of his best memories is when he assisted with the film "Dirty Harry" and had a beer with famous actor Clint Eastwood on Fisherman's Wharf.

Joe was an avid golfer, he enjoyed playing alongside his brothers and friends on courses in California and Texas. He has achieved at least three “hole-in-one” along the way.

During his time in San Francisco Joe met Jessica Guiterrez and had a daughter, Jessica Lillian.

When Joe retired he returned to Galveston County where he spent the rest of his years with friends and family. Joe enjoyed taking the train and traveled back to California as much as he could to visit his family.

In his later years, Joe was cared for by his son Larry and grandson Lawson, who provided him with the excellent care that he deserved. During this time, Joe enjoyed watching sports, listening to music, and sharing stories and jokes with family and friends.

On the morning of January 15, 2024, Joe peacefully passed away at the age of 87.

Joe fought the good fight while never losing his charm and humor. He would want us to remember and treasure the memories of youth, health, and happiness. He succeeded in life by being the best Brother, Father, and Grandfather. His family will miss him deeply and will hold his memory forever in their hearts.

Joe is survived by his children Sabrina and J.J. Womack(spouse), Larry Ochoa, Natalie Dolan, and Jessica Perez.

Along with his grandchildren, Lee Dolan and Krystal(spouse); Kolbi Dolan; Lawson Ochoa and Presley, Cash and Monroe Perez; Great grandchildren Hayden and Ryan.

As well as his brother Johnny and sister-in-law Lissa Ochoa, his brother Adam and his sisters Lucy Manifold, Dolores (Tiny) Benevidas, and Mary Apolinar.

Special recognition to his brother Adam Ochoa who dearly shared his companionship, wine, and fine dining, and Diane and Phillip Christensen who were always there for loving assistance and encouragement.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. at the Nessler Center, 2010 Fifth Ave. N., Texas City, Texas 77590 in the Captains Room.  Refreshments will be served after the service from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
