In Loving Memory

Grace Christina Hopkins Collins

March 22, 1929 – September 18, 2023

Born March 22, 1929, Grace Christina Hopkins Collins, died Monday, September 18, 2023 at the age of 94 in Alvin, Texas where she had lived most of her full life.  She was born on Galveston Island as her dad, Clarence Hopkins was working on the Flagship and her mother, Lou Edith Jones Hopkins, was bringing lunch.

Raised in Alvin, getting a degree from Baylor University, she set off to see the world with her husband, George Byfield Collins, Jr., after their marriage in December 1952.  They took two small daughters, Christina and Georganna, with them to Europe as her husband was in the U.S. Air Force.  They came back to the states in 1958 with a third child, George Byfield Collins, III, born in France.  After retirement from military service, they settled back in Alvin where Grace has been active as legal secretary from McNeil, Thrash, and Williams, Attorneys at law, city secretary for Hillcrest village, serving as treasurer and regent in the Asa Underwood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, performing with the Stars and Stripes Ukelele Band at area-wide churches and retirement and nursing homes.  She also volunteered as a “Gray Lady” nursing assistant, and more recently at the Alvin Food Pantry and Alvin Senior Center. Grace was the longest and oldest member of Grace Episcopal Church in Alvin.

She is survived by her daughter Georganna B. Collins and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her, especially the staff at Caring Country Cottage Personal Care Home where she passed after living there the last few good months of her life surrounded by family and a caring and loving staff.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace Episcopal Church, 200 W. Lang St., Alvin, Texas 77511 with the Rev. Suzanne Smith officiating.  A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhom.com.

  1. Dear Georganna,

We were so sorry to learn this morning of Grace's death. We last saw her in 2019 when we stopped by her house while we were in town for a memorial service. We have such good memories of her when the girls were younger and she was so kind to them. And she relished talking about how much she enjoyed raising you, Christina and George. She was truly one of the most capable, good-hearted, hard-working, memorable women we've ever met.

I just learned about Grace. She called on me several times to help in the elections here in Hillcrest, and we became good friends. We saw each other often thru the years at the senior center. She was a warm and caring person and she will be missed. God be with you.
