January 24, 1943 – September 10, 2024
Barbara Lou Hahn Wood died on September 10, 2024, from complications of lung cancer. She was born January 24, 1943, in Davenport, Iowa, to Harry Hahn and Fern Schneckloth Hahn. She was raised on a farm in Scott County, Iowa, attended a one-room country school and a school in Walcott, Iowa. She was active in 4-H and graduated from Davenport West High School in 1961. She attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in language arts and a teaching certification in 1965. She married Garth Wood in 1966 and in 1967 they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he took a job as a research chemist with Celanese Chemical Company. Both of their children, Brian M. Wood and Anthony D. Wood, were born in Corpus Christi. Garth was transferred to the Houston area and they moved to Friendswood, Texas, in 1970. Barbara started teaching in 1972 while Garth attended law school. Garth began practicing law in 1974 and Barbara taught in the Alvin, Pearland, and Clear Creek School Districts until she retired.
She served as a Student Council sponsor for many years as well as taught English and Spanish. She was active in her community and served on her local homeowner’s association board for several years. She was active in the life of her two sons, in particular attending their sporting events and serving on multiple sports governing bodies. Later she attended many of her grandchildren’s events, especially soccer games, softball games, baseball games, and swimming meets.
She was always proud of her children and grandchildren, praising their efforts whether they won or lost. In 1992, Barbara and Garth purchased a second home in Breckenridge, Colorado, and starting in 2008, they spent June to September summers in the mountains.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Harry and Fern.
