In Loving Memory

Anneliese Krauter Gallaway

December 21, 1925 – March 1, 2022

Anneliese Krauter Gallaway, 96, of Friendswood, Texas passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.  She was born to Otto Krauter and Anna Elizabeth Krauter on December 21, 1925 in Wetzlar, Germany. Anneliese grew up during World War II. It was excruciatingly painful for her to share her stories. She lost all her uncles on her father’s side in the war and her father was exempt from the draft to carry on the family name. During the joint occupation of Germany after WWII, Anneliese met the love of her life, Winston Travis Gallaway. Anneliese spoke fluent English and German and this made her an invaluable resource during this unforgettable time in history. She married Winston on March 22, 1952 in Germany. They were married 60 years. Winston suffered from Alzheimer’s for his last 21 years of life and Anneliese never failed him once during the course of the disease.

She became a naturalized American citizen in 1955 in Houston, Texas, making the front page of the Houston Chronicle. The judge made a special exception and expedited her citizenship so that she could accompany Winston to the Philippines. This would be the start of his 45 years of service with the Federal Government; mostly outside of the United States. Foreign assignments included the Philippines, France, Afghanistan, Colombia, Panama and Mexico. Other foreign travel included Pakistan, India, Spain, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Ecuador. She was an eternal optimist and embraced each new opportunity and challenge. She learned to drive in each country, a feat in itself. She knew that was important to enable her family to navigate and embrace opportunities in each country. Anneliese attended many diplomatic functions with Winston at the American Embassies in the various countries and diplomatic functions of embassies of other nations. In Colombia, she learned her third language, Spanish.

Those who knew Anneliese knew that she had the most extraordinary and beautiful mind and was very detail oriented. Learning was a normal daily activity, every day of her life. She always stayed current on foreign and national affairs. She loved learning about technology. Even at her advanced age, she learned how to use a computer, iPad and iPhone. She was remarkable. The only thing that slowed her down was macular degeneration her last two years. Anneliese loved the outdoors, loved to exercise and swim, well into her 90’s. She was kind and polite to everyone and always had a smile. She lived a full life, rich of worldly experiences. She was distinguished, classy and eloquent, and precision was important to her. Anneliese was so proud of her granddaughter, Gabriela, who got accepted into Texas A&M University while she was dining and celebrating her 95th birthday together! She was a proud Aggie mom and Aggie grandmother.

Anneliese was preceded in death by her husband, Winston Gallaway, her brother Hans Georg Krauter and sister, Ingeborg Krauter Roloff; both of Germany. She is survived by her son, Charles Gallaway and wife Deborah of Virginia, son Stephen Gallaway and wife Elisa of Pennsylvania, and daughter Carol Gallaway Bengoechea and son-in-law Jaime Bengoechea, and her granddaughter, Gabriela Eliese Bengoechea, the apple of her eye.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 (281) 992-7200 with Fr. Bob Barras officiating.   Anneliese will be laid to rest next to Winston at the Houston National Cemetery.

  1. Although I did not know Mrs. Gallaway, she sounds like a very remarkable lady. Her obituary speaks so well of who she was. God bless her family at this sad time. I know she was loved very much and will be missed. It would have been an honor to have known her.—-Janie Whitaker—-Alvin, Texas

Medication tech from Heartis Clear Lake – it was a pleasure to be able to know and care for Anneliese. Although I did not know her for long, she has forever made a lasting impact on my life. It is not everyday you meet a 96 year old woman with the same curiosity as a youthful child, generosity and kindness of someone who has never known a loss, and who looked as if she was ready to walk the runway at any given moment. I spent many evenings talking with Anneliese and Carol about my times at A&M, past work experiences, and future plans. Anneliese was always so intrigued and full of questions, always wanting to know more. I hope to forever hold onto my sense of curiosity just as Anneliese did. She proved that age is in fact just a number and that there is always more to be learned in this crazy thing we call life. Carol – Thank you for sharing your mother with us, it has been an honor getting to know you both.

The lights of heaven are glowing brighter, and the angels are singing sweeter as Ms. Anneliese joined her Heavenly Father and all her family.. There are few words to describe this adorable friend, and to all she met…you instantly felt a kinship to her. Carol, what an amazing daughter you are! She loved you and trusted your care and decisions for her. She taught you well the art of kindness and caring for others first! And to her sons, she was always talking about you and waiting for you to come. That was the hope and forward thinking she lived for, visits from her precious family. One thing I know, she left her mark on my heart, I will never forget her smile and words of encouragement! God bless you all and we pray “His tender kindness“ as you maneuver life without her. She was definitely ONE of a KIND! Enjoy eternity my friend…you deserve to soar with the angels.
