In Loving Memory

Ann M. Blakeney

February 18, 1933 – December 4, 2022

Ann Blakeney, 89, of Alvin, TX passed away on December 4, 2022.  She was born in Jacksonville, TX on Feb. 18, 1933 to Bertie and Cullen Moore.  She attended Jacksonville High School and was Valedictorian; played percussion in the band; loved all things outdoors and loved being around the animals on her family farm.  After high school she attended Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville and the Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos (now Texas State University).

She and her first husband, Bob Beaty, received job offers from Alvin ISD after she graduated from college, she as a teacher at Alvin Primary and Bob as the Alvin High School basketball coach.  Bob died unexpectedly about a year after they were married.  Several years later, Ann married Tom Blakeney Jr. on June 23, 1960, and they were married until Tom’s death in 1998.  Ann was a devoted and much-loved mother to her two children Beverly and Thomas.  Her two grand-daughters adored her, and now treasure many happy memories from time spent at “Anna’s” house.

Joys of her life included having wonderful adventures with her grand-daughters, becoming a Texas-certified wildlife rehabilitator, teaching school at Alvin Primary for 29 years, fishing with Tom at Sam Rayburn, fishing and picnicking at Camp Mohawk, volunteering at St. Luke’s Hospital for 20 years, and sharing her knowledge and love of birds, other animals, and nature with her children, students, colleagues, and friends.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Blakeney Jr. and son, Tom Blakeney, III.

She is survived by her daughter Beverly DeJarnett (Jeff) The Woodlands, TX and grand-daughters, Claire DeJarnett (Madison), Fort Worth, TX and Paige DeJarnett, Fayetteville, AR.  Also survived by her sister Bebe Hubbard, Southlake, TX, niece Kay Hubbard Green (Tommy), Southlake, TX, nephew Don Hubbard (Cindy), Georgetown, TX, and niece Carol Ann Morris (Neal), College Station, TX.  Also survived by several grand-nieces and a grand-nephew as well as several great grand-nieces and nephews.

Ann was gracious, generous, kind, poised, and thoughtful, and she always loved a good joke.  She was happiest when she was doing something for others – whether they be animals or humans!

Our deepest thanks are given to Ann’s friends and caregivers that loved her and took exceptional care of her in her home over the past 12 years. They include Charlotte and Bruce Martin, Lou and Albert Padilla, Connie Clark Hupe, Huguette Tchoua and Okonkwo Chidinma (Chidi). Heartfelt thanks are also given to the wonderful nurses and staff at Hospice Plus.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at South Park Baptist Church, 1718 S. Johnson St., Alvin, TX 77511 with Reverend Dr. Chad Bertrand officiating.

  2. My sister, JoAnn Edmiston, was great friends with Ann. They taught together and socialized together. My sister has been gone for 20 years but she would want you to know how much she cherished their friendship. My deepest sympathies to you. I, too, was very fond of Ann.

  3. This fine lady was absolutely one of the finest people it has been my pleasure to know. She made the world a better place to live in. Mrs. Blakeney carried herself with a grace that is rare and it was privilege to have been taught by her.
