In Loving Memory

Alan James Valicek

January 1, 1952 – July 18, 2024

Alan Valicek passed away peacefully in his sleep in Friendswood, Texas on July 18, 2024, at 72 years of age after a brief illness. He was born on January 1, 1952, in Hallettsville, Texas and grew up in the community of Saint John near Schulenburg, Texas on the family farm and ranch until he became an adult and moved to Houston. He bought a house in Friendswood in 1976 with his wife, Janice Valicek, where they had 4 children and live to this day.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ladik and Dolores. He is loved and missed by his wife, Janice Valicek, his four children Ryan and wife Wendy, Eric, Paul, and Mary and husband James. He is also loved and missed by his six grandchildren, Elena, Robyn, Jacob, Annie, Rachel, and Isaac, his sisters, Charlene and Catherine, and many nieces and nephews. His death was quite unexpected, but we are happy that it was without suffering, at home seated in his favorite chair, and with his wife.  We are also grateful for the family vacation we were able to share with him just two weeks prior, at the Frio River, his preferred family vacation spot.

How do you describe a life well lived? Two words: Alan Valicek. Alan was an extremely strong and capable man, who grew up on a farm in Schulenburg. He was able to build or fix anything. He was playfully referred to as “MacGyver.” He worked for Centerpoint Energy (previously Houston Lighting and Power) for 54 years, starting out as a lineman and working his way up into management.  His coworkers have said that he was a great boss and mentor.  He also shined as a mentor and Scout Master in the Boy Scouts, helping all three of his boys and other troop members learn many skills, become Eagle Scouts, and enjoy so much fun outdoors.  Alan was always very good at hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the deer lease, hiking, and tasks on the ranch with loved ones, anything with nature.  He had a special penchant for nurturing plants, especially trees.  He ran cattle on the Valicek family farm in Schulenberg, which he enjoyed tremendously. He showed anyone who would listen pictures of his calves.  Alan deeply loved the Valicek farm. He devoted countless hours to maintaining and improving it, despite still working full time for Centerpoint into his seventies.

More than anything, Alan loved his family.  He was married to his dear wife Janice for 48 years. Their love and care for one another was an inspiration for everyone around them.  Alan and Jan had 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Alan was very much involved in all of their lives.  He took them to baseball practice, babysat when needed, and did countless fun things with them at the Valicek farm.

He was a truly wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.  His eldest son sums it up when he says "I really thought my Dad was invincible.  There is simply no way to step into his shoes." Alan knew what was truly important in life, and he focused only on those things. Dedication to family, indomitable work ethic, serving his community, nurturing animals and plants, enjoying nature.

Therefore, Alan was the epitome of a life well lived, and loved.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at 12:00 P.M. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood, Texas.  A rosary dedicated to Alan will be prayed at 12:30 P.M. followed by a Mass.  A reception will be at 2:00 P.M. with light refreshments.  We welcome all those whose lives were touched by him to join us.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this knowing Allan as a BFHS 1970 classmate and considered him to be a really good friend. May he rest in God’s eternal peace and may his wife and family take comfort in knowing others really loved him also. God bless and rest easy.

  3. What can you say about a person like Alan. I was truly saddened to hear the news of his death. There is a void in the firmament resulting from Alan’s passing. May his soul rest in peace and may God’s perpetual light shine upon him.

  9. Sincere condolences to the family. I am so very sorry for your loss. May God provide the necessary peace and comfort to your family and friends during this difficult time. Please remember these words of encouragement from the Bible: “Jesus plainly told her: I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” —John 11:20-25.

  10. Dear Valicek Family,
I am stunned by your sudden loss and add my prayers to all the others who are praying for you now. I worked with Alan in his last year as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. Even in that short time together, I was impressed by his devotion to his family and his intense focus on doing what was most important – even if it was hard. Many years later, after Hurricane Harvey, I had the wonderful experience of working at the Mary Queen food pantry with Paul. The food pantry had been turned into a free grocery store in the old church. Everyone who needed food was given two helpers – one to escort them through the grocery store and help them pick out food and one to load the groceries in their vehicle. Paul was a strong young man and was naturally assigned to help load the groceries into the cars. But as Paul watched the people having such pain from the loss of dignity from Harvey, he decided that he needed to do the more difficult job – escorting the people through the grocery store. When I asked Paul if he was sure, I saw the reflection of Alan's determination to do what was most important in Paul's face.
