February 24,1956 – May 5, 2025
Our beloved Wayne Henry Spurr, 69, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones on May 5, 2025, in Friendswood, Texas. Wayne was born on February 24, 1956, in Bay City, Texas, to James and Augusta Spurr. He leaves behind a lasting impact of love, values, principles and unwavering kindness. Wayne was a constant source of strength, hope and encouragement to all who knew and loved him. If you were one of the privileged to be welcomed into Wayne Spurr’s circle, you were indeed blessed. Wayne wasn’t a man of many words, but when he spoke, it was always with respect and wisdom, and if by chance you got to be around for his unexpected dry wit, it always put a smile on your face. Wayne was a man of strong faith and conviction, and he loved his family with his whole heart.
Wayne went on to go to Texas State Technical Institute upon high school graduation in 1974. Once he graduated, he became employed as an underwater welder, which he loved doing, and ended his career as a Certified Welding Inspector in Nuclear and Chemical plants across the United States and other countries.
Wayne loved to fish and hunt, but his favorite past time was spending time on his property in Edna where he raised black Brangus cattle. He could spend countless hours tinkering in his barn and tending to his cattle. He delighted in taking the grandchildren and family to spend time with him there.
In 1997, he met the love of his life, Debbie. He had been a confirmed bachelor for 44 years, and in the words of one of his close friends, “Many had come before Debbie, but none had been successful!” They were blessed to share one of the sweetest, most devoted love stories for 28 years. They married in 2000 and would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in December.
Wayne saw fatherhood and being a grandfather as a gift and nurtured and cherished it beyond measure. He loved and looked forward to times spent with family and friends; it was his most cherished time!
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Debbie, and their two children; Ashley and husband, Matt Barnett, and son, Chris Shotwell; grandchildren; Christian Barnett, Collin Barnett, Carson Barnett, and Kyla Shotwell; brothers; Stan Spurr and wife, Cindy, Jim Spurr, and Roland Spurr; sisters-in-law Shirley Panetti, and Dianne Brumley and husband, Allan; nephews, Jim Spurr, and wife, Julie, Stanley Spurr, and wife, Julia; nieces, Johanna Tamaz, and husband, Manuel, Sarah Wendel, and husband, Ricky, Christy White, and husband, Charlie; numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins. Wayne was preceded in death by his father, James Spurr, his mother, Augusta Spurr, brother Christopher Spurr, and brother Charles Spurr.
Wayne Spurr was one of a kind! He loved with all his being. He was respectful, loyal, generous and kind. He was a man of integrity. He loved God, family, friends and country! If only more people were like him, what a wonderful world this would be.
The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Jacob Mandel and Dr. Akash Patel who took care of Wayne like family for over ten years during his battle with brain cancer. We also offer our gratitude to the physicians, nurses and technicians at St. Luke’s Hospital and Spectrum Hospice that took care of Wayne so lovingly; their kindness and professionalism is so appreciated and won’t be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jeter Memoria Funeral Home.
