In Loving Memory

David Glen Mather

March 22, 1943 – June 5, 2024

David Glen Mather was born on March 22, 1943, in Denver, Colorado where he spent his formative years, graduating from North High School.  He served in the United States Army, after which he found employment in the security industry and finally had the good sense to move to Texas in the 1970’s never going back to the snow except to visit family.  His main employment was working with home security and fire alarm inspections. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 5, 2024, after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

David is survived by his wife and best friend, Carole, his bonus children, Georgiana (Joel) Frisby of Austin and David Valdez of Friendswood, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his sister, Karen Wolfe of Colorado Springs, Colorado, sisters-in law Beth (Gary) Skinner of Louisiana, Janice (Don) Frisco, Texas, and brother-in-law Gregg Williams of Arlington, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from both the Mather and Valdez families. He was pre-deceased in death by his loving sister, Gail Mather Oaks of Maryland and a son, Glen Mather of Colorado.

David’s employment enabled him to take advantage of one of his hobbies; namely, photography.  He would photograph unusual (to him) things he would see along his route. Prior to the days of digital photography, he used 35mm film and developed it himself, using a closet that he had made into a darkroom.  Long before the days of Facebook, he would send these pictures to friends and family via email. Before his health began to fail, there were very few times you would see him without his camera.  He was very active in the Masonic Fraternity, the Kairos Prison Ministry, Family Promise of Clear Lake, the Change Bell Ringers at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church and the Hand Bell Ringers at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. He was very active in his Church, serving both on the Vestry after he and Carole married and at the Altar, which gave him great pleasure and it was something he missed being able to do later.

David was very talented in many areas.  In addition to his photography, he thoroughly enjoyed working around the house. He remodeled several homes that he lived in over the years, including doing electrical and plumbing work. He loved to read and has the books to show for it, both hard copies and digital.  After his eyesight began to fail, he listened to books on tape. Listening to The Holy Bible and the Houston Astros Baseball games were his favorite pastimes.  He was known to enjoy a good Scotch now and then, too.  All his life, he was a cat person, until Carole convinced him to let her bring “Butch”, her son’s Schnoodle to live with them, although she never did convert him completely.  The last cat they have, AllieKat, is a polydactyl and remained by his side during his last days.

David was very active in the Masonic fraternity. He was raised to the Master Mason Degree at Dayton, Texas, Lodge #852 on May 22, 1989.  He affiliated with South Houston Lodge #1295 in October 1990, where he served as Master of the Lodge in 1995.  He went on to serve as Thrice Illustrious Master of Park Place Council #373 in 2001, Excellent High Priest of Park Place Chapter #458 in 2002, and Eminent Commander of Park Place Commandery in 2004.  He also served several times as Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star.

Services will be on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at11 AM, with reception to follow at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 1207 W. Winding Way, Friendswood, Texas; Burial with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 24, 2024, at the Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston 77038.  Following the services at the Veterans Cemetery there will be light refreshments and Masonic Services at South Houston Masonic Lodge #1295, 1112 Dallas St., South Houston, Texas

In addition to the many friends that called, texted, and visited with us during the time we were shut in, the family wishes to thank the A Serene Hospice Care, especially our nurses Fernanda Hernandez and Genesis de la Torre, The Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Houston, and Nurse Next Door for the excellent care and support they have given us. We wish to particularly thank Fr. Jeff Bohansky and friends from Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church who participated in David’s service: Victor Lamas, Sandra Begalke, Judy Fletcher and Emily Pittman. Thank you for the glorious celebration in David’s honor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Park Place Commandery #106, 8240 Glenview Dr., Houston, TX 77017 or to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

Such a sweet man of God.

To me, one of the most notable things about David was how very much he loved Carole.

Bill and I are so sorry for your loss.

  2. We are all so sorry for your loss. We will miss Dave and his dry sense of humor.
Our OES meetings just won't be the same or as much fun without him.
    Luv ya, Carole.

"Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to you our brother David, who was reborn by water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism. Grant that his death may recall to us your victory over death, and be an occasion for us to renew our trust in your Father's love. Give us, we pray, the faith to follow where you have led the way; and where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to the ages of ages. Amen."

"Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn, especially Carole, her children and grandchildren; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

  4. David was a gentle loving person. I remember ringing with him in the Palmer bell tower. When I was practicing being an acolyte he was always by my side.

You will be missed David. Sending love and prayers to Carole and the family ❤️
