In Loving Memory

Janet Elaine Morey Haken

May 12, 1937 – April 1, 2023

Janet Elaine Morey Haken of Friendswood, Texas was born May 12, 1937, to Florence and Grant Morey of Lansing, MI. Jan died on April 1, 2023. She was married on August 8, 1959, to Richard Lee Haken (deceased) of Grand Rapids, MI. They had 2 children; Traci Lee Haken Murphy, of Arlington, TX, and Daryl Richard Haken (deceased) of Friendswood, TX.

Jan taught nursing at the University of Michigan from 1960-1966. Nurse Haken was the Friendswood Junior High School Nurse from August 1972 to July 2001. Jan was an avid sports fan. She watched more sports live or on TV than any other member of her family. Whenever possible, she watched the college progress of her former students.

When her children were young, Jan volunteered as the athletic trainer for their Little League sports teams. For many years, once her children had graduated from public schools, she ran the stadium clock for the junior high football teams and kept the scorebook for the junior high boys’ basketball games. Jan was a season ticket holder for the WNBA Houston Comets basketball team from 1997-2008, during which she missed less than a handful of games.

Music played a large part of Jan’s life. When she was not performing, she was an enthusiastic supporter of local and area musical theatre.

After retirement, Jan traveled to many interesting locations. Most of the trips were via cruise.

I'm so sorry to hear about Jan. We worked together at Friendswood Jr. High School. She as nurse and I was the principal's secretary. She brought me a little salt dish from her trip to Russia with Richard which I still have, and I think about her every time I see it.

Jan was a wonderful mother, fríend and neighbor. When Traci & Daryl were on the swim team with Sonia, we enjoyed watching the competitions and learned many things about such activities that have been useful to us as our grandchildren became involved in them. She was a good neighbor to those of us who lived in Lori Woods and included us in Christmas parties.
Jan was a good friend to the teachers at Cline Primary, later Cline Elementary. She & Barbara Brown kept us up to date on health topics that we might have neglected as busy teachers.
Traci, we send our love and prayers for comfort. May the ache & void in your heart be filled with memories of all the good times you had together. We celebrate your mother’s wonderful life. Please accept our sincere sympathy for your loss.
    Bob & Mary Ellen Ried
