December 13, 1936 – February 14, 2023
John Edward Devereux passed away on February 14, 2023, surrounded by family at home. He was eighty-six years of age.
John was born on December 13, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois. He proudly served in the United States Navy as an airman on the USS Intrepid (CVA-11), something he always showed off by wearing his hat. He attended University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and received a BS in engineering. He worked for Shell for 35 years before retiring in 1997. He married the love of his life, Theresa, on October 2nd, 1965, and they had three children together: Gregory, Daniel, and Annette. The family moved around throughout his life, but the couple decided to retire to Pearland, Texas.
John was very passionate about traveling – a pastime he shared with his daughter and younger son – and loved to drive their RV around the country with his wife. He enjoyed spending time with family and falling asleep in any place you could imagine. He was involved with helping veterans and supported St. Vincent de Paul Society.
John was always the life of the party and could start a conversation with any stranger he met, a trait he passed on to his sons. He enjoyed making people laugh and dancing and singing for his granddaughters.
John is survived by his wife, Theresa, his children, Gregory (and his wife, Stephanie), Daniel, and Annette, and his granddaughters, Ashley and Courtney. He also leaves behind his siblings, Jim (Jeannette), Mary (Tom), and Joan, along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Eileen.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home 311 N. Theresa and all the family. We will surely miss our sweet John – the life of the party and always willing to give a helping hand. God's blessing to you all at this most difficult time. With love and my deepest sympathy, Nancy
My sincerest condolences for the family! Praying that they find peace in these trying times.
Stephanie and Greg and girls. Sorry for your great loss of you dad and grandpa. You are in our prayers.
Dear sweet Annette, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your daddy. I wish I was there to give you a big hug. My mom died from Alzheimer’s, too. It’s a very cruel disease. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish you all peace and comfort knowing that he is now free. My love to you all.
Dear Theresa and children,
I had the good fortune of having John as a roommate in September, 1960 at the University of Illinois. I was an incoming freshman from Belleville, Illinois. I had been unable to register for my classes and was thinking I would never make it at the University of Illinois, especially since I wasn't able to negotiate registering for classes. John, being older and wiser, helped me get registered. He was there when I needed a helping hand. I have never forgotten the kindness he showed me.
I now reside at 14 Midwood Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790. My phone number is 631-751-3525.
Our condolences to all of you.
