In Loving Memory

Phyllis Marie van Eps

November 29, 1937 – July 9, 2024

Phyllis Marie van Eps, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood, Texas. The viewing will begin at 9:30 AM, with a mass following at 10:30 AM.

Phyllis was born on November 29th, 1937, in Willemstad, Curaçao and moved to Houston, Texas in November 1985. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Karel Johann de Vos van Eps, and their angel baby, as well as her beloved parents, Petrus “Piet” Breusers and Ida Broekman-Breusers, and sister, Jacqueline Breusers. A cherished, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and, aunt, Phyllis is survived by her brother, Rubert and his spouse, Ans; her children, Arlene van Eps-de la Garza and her spouse, Michael, John van Eps, Suzette van Eps-Durrani and her spouse, Saleem, and, Caresse van Eps-Scheuler and her spouse, Bryan; her grandchildren, Terrence Corsen and his spouse, Sarah, Dustin Mitchell de la Garza, Sue Ellen Cooper and her spouse, Jeremy, Thomas van Eps, Natasha Gilbreath and her spouse, Aaron, Sameer Durrani, Bryanna Scheuler, Sarah Durrani, Charra Scheuler, and, Cealey Scheuler, who all affectionately called her “Oma”; and her seven great-grandchildren, to whom she was “Omama”.

Prior to her marriage to Karel on May 1, 1958, Phyllis worked within the government of Curaçao. After immigrating to the United States, Phyllis received a Cosmetology degree and proceeded to give her grandchildren free matching haircuts. A gifted linguist, Phyllis was fluent in her native Papiamento, as well as Dutch, English, Spanish, and French. Her hobbies included writing poetry, for which she won a Golden Poet Award, and tending to a vast array of plants, as well as spending quality time with those she loved and talking about the history of her family. During the youth of her grandchildren, she would often vacation with them, take them to the library and out to eat, as well as teach them how to play Yahtzee and Dominoes, how to make Pastechi and Funchi, and encourage them to follow their passions. Above all, Phyllis loved to watch her family grow in experience, ability, and, in love.

Phyllis was known for her selflessness and compassionate nature, always prioritizing the needs of others before her own and creating an environment where her extended family, friends, and new acquaintances were treated like her siblings and children. Her warmth and kindness left an undeniable mark on the lives of everyone she encountered, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her presence had a profound impact on those around her, and her absence will continue to resonate in our hearts and minds throughout our lives.

Phyllis lived her life in the best way and passed on wishing that her friends and family would continue to emulate her, spreading unending love, patience and compassion to those around us. While our hearts mourn the loss of the matriarch of our great family, we are joyful that she is at peace and is not suffering.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood, Texas.

May she rest in peace.

Lots of memories made with Tante Phyllis. She loved her family deeply. I remember her how she welcomed people in her home. I was lucky to get a free haircut too! The making of snacks, I learned to make kaas bal at her home in Curaçao. Sometimes we would put music on as teenagers and one day she would just join us and dance with us. I know she is dancing in the sky now and praying for us all!
