In Loving Memory

Shirley Ann (Yates) Garnett

April 18, 1951 – May 26, 2021

Shirley Garnett, age 70, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away peacefully with her family by her side the morning of May 26, 2021. She was born April 18, 1951 to Grady and Merlene Yates of Pasadena, TX.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Greg and Mary Garnett, Grandsons Jake and Ryan Garnett, her brother Gerald (Bubba) Yates and wife Pam, brother-in-law Larry Garnett and wife Debbie along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Β She was preceded in death by her parents Grady "Glyn" and Merlene Yates.

Shirley was most proud of her son and his family. She never missed a moment to love and help them anyway that she could. Shirley loved being a mom but she said that a new level of love arrived when her grandsons were born, and she became a Mimi. She would often be seen at the baseball fields or basketball courts cheering on her favorite boys! She never missed a moment to have lunch with them, take them shopping or simply snuggle and read with them.

When Shirley was not with her family she was with her friends or her "other family" as she referred to them. She enjoyed shopping trips, home tours, brunches and annual girl trips with her friends. She was a loyal friend and loved by many. She valued each of her lifelong friendships and spent endless hours on the phone with friends over the last few years.

Shirley never gave up and through the last few months of her battle she kept a smile on her face, never complaining and always wanting to keep fighting. She had an amazing passion for life and love for everyone.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M., with the family receiving friends at 5:30 P.M., on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546, (281) 992-7200, with Rev. Mike Manning officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to MD Anderson Cancer Center at www.mdanderson.org/donate or to Houston Hospice at www.houstonhospice.org/donate-options/

Condolences may be sent to the Garnett family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

My sincere condolences to the Garnett and Yates families on Shirley's passion. She was a wonderful lady and a close family friend. I'm keeping Greg and Mary, and all who knew and loved Shirley, in my thoughts and prayers.

    1. Shirley was ever present in our community during my childhood. I was mesmerized by her as a young girl. She was stunning – always put together, dressed impeccably, and flashing her beautiful smile. Shirley was classy, graceful and she had a gorgeous heart. She was always ready for a long talk and hearty laughs. She was incredibly thoughtful and a good friend. Everyone knew how much she absolutely loved Greg.

We love you, Shirley. You will be missed immensely.

I will remember Shirley fondly. As a neighbor for many years, we spent many hours in wonderful conversation, mostly about our boys. Shirley always was full of love and grace and quick witted jokes. My love goes to Greg and his family.

To my best friend, roommate, confidant, and so many other things from when I started growing up at age 18 and we shared everything for so many years. So many memories, good times, scary times and getting up at 3 A.M. to go and have pancakes on Westheimer in Houston. The time you were "spending the weekend" with me at my home in South Houston, so you told your Mom, you know now Mrs. Yates, and for some reason my Mom covered for us when we flew to Dallas one weekend to go to a club where supposedly the Dallas Cowboys hung out and on our way, my Mom annouced over the loud speaker at the Intercontinental Airport in Houston to call her and when I did, she told me your Mom wanted to speak with you. Upon your calling her, holding the phone so tight so she could not hear the loud announcements from the airport, "FLIGHT #207 LEAVING FOR SAN ANTONIO IN 15 MINUTES FROM RUNWAY #5" and luckily your Mom did not hear, we went on our way and had a great time. When these guys were following us, we drove into an apartment complex real quick, turned off the lights and ducked down and "they pulled in right behind us" and we just stayed down. We met these two airplane pilots and they took us in to see Danny Gleason's private jet where everything (i.e. air vents, all metal fixtures) were made of "pure gold" and we set and talked for a while. We had so many memories such as these, too many to mention. But, we had each others back, loved one another and were always there for one another, please just know Shirley, I love you and will forever and will see you someday. For now, you can visit with my Mom and daughter, Christin and enjoy the blessings that our Heavenly Father has so many to give you.

Gregg and Mary, may God bless you and your precious family, give you the strength you need to endure and be able to be with your Mom someday when you are called home and know that she will always be there watching over you., Love you,

I am going to miss you so very much! You were such a positive light in my life. I have so many wonderful memories of you starting from when I was 6 years old. Your home was were all the neighborhood kids would gather and everyone adored you. I remember many great blueberry muffins and cinnamon roll breakfasts and fun in the giant red heart tub! As I grew up, you were always there…with kind words and great advice. I remember my skating party where we raced each other…you were such a hoot! I have countless memories at Queen Oaks Cleaners and of your mother, "Mamaw". The trips to the ranch and the countless conversations in your kitchen and on the phone. Having you in my life has been amazing and a huge blessing. I hope to see you again my beautiful friend! I miss you already! Love, Margee

On behalf of the Timberlake family I would like to extend our warmest heartfelt condolences to the Yates and Garnett families on the loss of our beloved Shirley.
We are so saddened by the loss of such a wonderful family member- but we are consoled in cherishing the memories of the life she shared with us.
We are so thankful for all the things that she (and all the Yates family) did for all of us over the many years!
It would take a book to list all the wonderful everyday things that she so willing assisted us with.
I will not forget that she was always there to pick up Merlene and I from the airport on all our many adventures – her wonderful smile and warm welcoming home – she made us always feel so truly blessed. She was always there for us – and now – we will always be there for her – and remember her in our thoughts and prayers!
We love you and miss you Shirley – and thank God for the blessings you shared with us all.
God bless you – and all of your family!

  12. Charles "Budgy" Timberlake

I wish to extend my warmest condolences and sympathies to the Yates and Garnett families on the loss of our most beloved Shirley.
I was travelling internationally – and only learned of her passing late on the day of her remembrance services – and felt so extremely sad that I was unable to fly down and attend. I wish to express my sincerest condolences especially to Bubba and Greg – and to all her family members.
It was always such a pleasure to see Shirley at any family event – she had such of way of always making everyone feel so important and appreciated. She always found a way to single each person out – even in a large gathering – to let them know how very special they were to her.
Shirley was tall and had an unforgettable big smile – and always dressed in what the military would call – Class A style – a perfect uniform for any event. The moment she walked in a room – you knew she was someone special – and that she commanded – authority and respect!
Yes Shirley – you were a very special person – in all our lives!
We will always love and miss you so very much Shirley – and wish to thank you for all the happy memories you shared with us.
Our prayers are with you – and all of your family!
