In Loving Memory

Philip Magnus Johnson

12/7/1950 - 2/1/2018

Philip Magnus Johnson, 67, of League City, TX passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 surrounded by his family.

He was born December 7, 1950 in San Antonio, TX., Phil moved with his family to several Air Force bases in the US and Spain.  He graduated from High School in Madrid, after which he joined the United States Air Force having been sworn in by his father, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force.  Phil proudly served his country from 1970 to 1977.  He was stationed in Spain and Thailand where he easily learned the local language; this was a true gift of his.  After leaving the Air Force, Phil worked in the oil industry and retired from Exxon as a research technician.

One of Phil’s greatest enjoyments was training and showing his Keeshonden.  He trained his companions in obedience, with his dogs earning many titles.  His passion with Sadie was R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog).  Together, he and Sadie helped many third graders enjoy reading and gain confidence in their reading skills.  Another of Phil’s passions was learning to fly Cessna 172 and he was working on acquiring his sport pilot license with the Flying Tigers flight school.  He loved his flying lessons.  Phil was a long-time member of Hope Lutheran Church.  Over the years, Phil was involved in several ministries in the church especially with the Men’s Ministry.  Phil loved doing things with his family and friends and he created many treasured memories that all of us will hold dear to our hearts.

Phil was preceded in death by his father, Magnus P. Johnson and his mother, Johnie M. Johnson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Jo; his sister, Linda Byrd; brother-in-law, James Byrd; nephew, Ryan Byrd; nieces, Erin and Kayla Byrd; mother-in-law, Lorine Proske; brothers-in-law, James Proske and Curtis Proske; sister-in-law, Cheryl Maxwell; niece, Rachel De Luna; nephews, Zachary Maxwell, Daniel Proske, Andrew Maxwell, and Jason Proske.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the Hope Lutheran Church, 1804 S. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 with Rev. Ralph Hobratschk officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camp Hope at www.ptsdusa.org/Camp-Hope/.

Condolences may be sent to the Johnson family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.

In loving memory of Philip Magnus Johnson, Someone so special will not be forgotten. I worked with Phil for over 10years - we shared a Lab together and everyone loved Phil! He was a great guy- and a very kind and helpful man. He used to a make us all laugh and keep us all in laughter. We'd mess with his phone cord and play tricks-- he always got us back. He was great at ticking off our FLS with a stone cold expression.s..LOL. makes me laugh now I'll miss Phil- he was a great man.

My condolences to Betty and Phil's family. I knew him for 9 years and was always impressed by a kind word and friendly attitude he expressed even to strangers - despite his grave health challenges. He persevered and was not aware of his many strengths and what he taught others, myself included. I will miss him and his genuine gracious nature.
