John Carl

In Loving Memory

John Carl "Pug" Pontius

1/20/1940 - 7/14/2017

John Carl "Pug" Pontius, 77, was born in Houston, TX at St. Joseph's, on January 20, 1940 to John W. Pontius and Jonnie Danford Pontius.  After serving in the Navy, he excelled in the sales of oil-related equipment.  He continued his career with Wolar Industrial, Inc. until his death on July 14, 2017.

He was known for his generous spirit, love of nature, devotion to family and friends, and his kindness to animals.  Pug's life was never just a mere existence.  His greatest joy was sharing anything he owned, or cooked, with others.  He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman, but his passion for the great outdoors was less about the harvest and more about the celebration, conversation, and providing gourmet-style meals for those returning from the blinds.  He was not much of a threat to the deer and other wildlife that he enjoyed "glassing," but fossils, arrowheads and other artifacts didn't stand a chance.

Though Pug rarely left the great state of Texas, he was intimate with the mass of land from Houston to Ozona, and on down to Brownsville.  If you were a passenger of Pug's on a four-hour journey, you knew you were in for at least seven hours of stops to buy produce, honey, pecans, and historical marker readings.  One would come to expect customary detours to visit friends he had made on previous road trips.  He was an expert at making others feel special, and no person knew fewer strangers.  Pug has left us with a lifetime of memories.

He is survived by his sister, Mickie Christian and her husband, Paul; his nephew, Corey Christian and wife Amy; his nephew, Jeep Christian and wife Caroline, and their two children, Wells and Maggie; his niece, Kathy Pohl and husband Eric; and his beautiful aunt, Dolores Thomas.  Other family includes three generations of close cousins, plus childhood and life-long friends, and devoted co-workers.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood Dr., Friendswood, TX.  A celebration of John's "Pug's" life will follow with a fish fry.
