Robert Lee Hiles, Jr. was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1938. He passed away peacefully with family at his side on May 16, 2017. Robert, also known as Gunny, proudly served as a United States Marine from 1955 to 1975. Serving as a Drill Instructor for thousands of Marines, Robert prepared and led his Marines in the Tet Offensive of 1967-1968. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Robert worked for Amoco Chemical Company for 20 years. After a second retirement, he stayed busy running a communication company for five years before driving busses for Friendswood and Pearland school districts. He was very active in veteran organizations.
Robert is survived by his wife of 36 years Carol; daughter, Michelle and husband Robert Mills; son, Scott Brooks; grandchildren, Lauren and husband Trent McClain, Hunter Brooks, and Chance Brooks; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Gillian, and Jameson McClain. He also shared a special bond with his beloved in laws.
Anyone who was around him and knew his sense of humor was drawn to him and loved him.
Friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation with the family from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546, with the funeral services following at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be at 2:30 P.M. at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
