Sandra Rush Bell

Sandra Mae Rush Bell (affectionately known as “Sandi”), 75, was born on August 5, 1941 to Wendell and Alice (Barnes) Rush in Centralia, Illinois.  After a long battle with respiratory illness, Sandra departed this life on May 2, 2017 in Friendswood, Texas.               

Sandra accepted Christ at an early age.  She was a member of Ricks Chapel AME Church in Centralia,

and had continued to pay her tithes to Ricks Chapel AME for the past 30 years.  While attending Ricks Chapel AME, Sandra actively participated in Sunday school and church youth fellowship services.

Sandra attended public school in Centralia, Illinois where she graduated with “Honors” from Centralia

Township High School.  Following graduation from high school, Sandra attended Chicago Teachers

College, where she received her B.S. degree in Education. While attending Chicago Teachers College,

Sandra became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was a 50 year member of 

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.  After graduation from Chicago Teachers College, Sandra was employed at Betsy Ross Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois.   It was at this time when she met the love of her life, George Bell, who she married on January 29, 1966 in Centralia, Illinois.

After Sandra’s wedding, she and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by

IBM Corporation as a Computer Programmer, working mainly in the U.S. Pentagon Department area. She transferred to the Houston area (Friendswood, Texas) to work on the NASA Space Program at Johnson Space Flight Center for IBM Corporation in 1975.  During her work on the Space Program, Sandra held positions as Software System Engineer, Manager, Senior Manager and System Design Requirements.  She retired from IBM Corporation after 30 years of employment in 1996.

Sandra, after retiring from IBM, formed her own delivery service, “RUSH IT”, where she worked for

several employers delivering and/or picking up items as requested by some businesses located in the  

Friendswood, Texas area.  She was very active in community related activities in the Friendswood area.  She was a member of the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce for two (2) years.  She was also a member of the Toast Masters of Friendswood.  After 12 years of running her pickup / delivery business, Sandra decided to retire and enjoy life. 

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell and Alice (Barnes) Rush; brothers, Harold Lee Rush and William W. Rush; sisters, Ella Mae Rush and Doris Jean Meeks; nephews, Lamar Meeks, Norman Meeks, Harold Stanley Rush, Alden Rush and Darwin Rush; niece Deborah Johnson; sister-in law Freddie Mae Rush.

Sandra leaves to cherish her loving memory, her devoted husband George Bell; brothers, Henry Rush (Centralia,IL), Vernon (Rosa) Rush; sister-in-law’s,  Dorothy Rush and Geneva Rush; brother-in-law Henry Bell (Lexington, KY); nieces,  Abcjean McGill (William), Judy Meeks-Hakim, Rhudine (Larry) Steel, Jocelyn Rush and Rolanda Braden; nephews, Harold Lee Rush Jr, Gerald Rush, Bruce (Monique) Rush, Reginald Rush, Raphael (Diane) Rush, and Dietrich (Kimberly) Rush; and a host of relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 (281) 992-7200.

Steve and Charlotte Wisnewski

Steve worked with Sandy at IBM for many years; I knew her as an active member of the Imperial Estates Civic Club. She was always a good neighbor. May God grant her family His peace; we thank God for George's care for Sandy in her last months of life. Charlotte and Steve
