Gloria Ann Marquis

In Loving Memory

Gloria Ann Marquis

01/31/1941-03/14/2017

Gloria Ann Marquis, 76, of Alvin TX went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.  Gloria was born on January 31, 1941 in Newellton, LA to Talmadge and Louise Crane.  She earned her degree in Mathematics from Northwestern State College in 1962.  Later that year, she married her first husband Charles Jenkins.  After teaching two years in Louisiana, they moved to Alvin TX in 1966.  Gloria taught one year in Hitchcock before starting her thirty-eight year career as the librarian of Alvin Elementary.  A few years after the passing of her husband, Charles, in 1979, she met Earl Marquis.  The two were wed in March 1983 and have been happily married for thirty-four years.  Gloria played the piano and was very active with the GA’s (Girls in Action) at the First Baptist Church in Newellton.  She was a member 4-H growing up.   She enjoyed playing basketball throughout her high school years.  While in college, she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.  Gloria was a devoted member of the Alvin Historical Society as well as the Alvin Library League and Alvin Museum Society.  She also served two terms as president of the Association of Retired Teachers.  She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority for Women Educators where she held many offices, such as treasurer, secretary and president.  She taught Sunday school at South Park Baptist Church and was responsible for the altar flowers monthly.  Gloria was an avid bunco player and a member of the quilters  guild.  She loved to create many beautiful quilts with so many unique designs and colors. Some of her favorite pastimes were traveling, gardening and reading.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to so very many. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Talmadge and Louise Crane; and first husband, Charles Jenkins.

She is survived by her husband, Earl Marquis; daughter, Melanie Hughes and her husband Tommy; son, Charles Jenkins II; granddaughters, Ashley Matusek and her husband Scott, Emily Hughes and her fiancé Adam, Sarah Mackin, Kaytlyn Christie and her husband Josh; grandsons, Christian Perkins, Travis Mackin, Brandon Carney; great granddaughter, Olive Townley; brothers, Dale Crane and his wife Rosa, Dr. Kirk Crane and his wife Susan, and Keith Crane; many other relatives, close friends, and sorority sisters.
